Description:
Grant Richards, London., 1900. First edition. Later (1908) hardbound issue of a book originally published in wrappers. Octavo. pp xiv, 101. Cloth-backed boards, top edge gilt. Grant Richards published 800 copies for distribution to members of the Fabian Society. It seems that not all of these found their way to members as in 1908 the Society authorised the binding up, as here, of 189 copies to be sold at 2s each. Shaw styles himself as merely the editor of the book, but his voice can be heard in every sentence.Endpapers very slightly spotted. Bump to bottom edge of front cover. Very good indeed.

Description:
Printed by E. Walker, for T. Bewick, Newcastle., 1818. First edition, with the inserted "receipt" bearing the facsimile thumbprint of Thomas Bewick and the signatures of him and his son, which has been bound before title-page; this copy is without the wood engraving of "Auld Clouty" which Bewick later suppressed and replaced with "The Philosopher". pp xxiv, 376. Frontispiece engraving of Thomas Bewick; 188 wood engraved illustrations and 136 tailpieces by him. Period binding of full leather, raised gilt decorated bands. Mounted onto the front free endpaper and at the bottom on the last page of contents are 19th century newspaper clippings on Anglo-Saxon themes which might or might not be illustrated by Bewick - if so, they are not in his usual style, but then this raises the question as to why they are present; also, for reasons unclear, there is a newspaper cutting of Hartley Coleridge's poem "The Solace of Song" on the verso of the title-page. There is… Read More

Humorous verse.Inscribed by the author on the first blank: "For Kaye Webb who is still kind to me after far too long - Ogden Nash" (with a small bespectacled self-portrait sketch). The recipient was one of the editors at Lilliput magazine where Nash was a regular contributor. She later made her name at Puffin Books where she published some of Nash's books. It is possible that the inscription dates from this later period. On the same page is the ink stamp of Nash's literary agents Curtis Brown.Inner hinges starting. Covers a bit rubbed at the edges.
