New York: F. Missler & Krimmert (H.A. Rost Ptg. and Pub. Co., New York), 1895. Large chromolithograph, 42 x 28 5/8 inches, an advertising poster designed to entice recent immigrants from Germany and eastern Europe to invest in farm lands in Georgia, apparently one of a number of fraudulent land development schemes from the last decades of the 19th century, but falling far short of the most famous, the development of Tallapoosa, Georgia, that cost investors millions of dollars. Missler & Krimmert, a foreign banking and steamship brokerage company, apparently also offered passage from Europe to the Americas from an office in Bremen, Germany, at the turn of the 20th century under the name "F. Missler," advertising "Taking passengers [on] Fast steamships to America [with] House Banking and Money Exchange." A very good, tight copy. CAMPBELL 559, the only work listed by this author, described as D.D.S. of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, but with his embossed stamp on the frontis., indicating a practice on Westminster Street in Providence, RI. "Facts for the People," was a slogan of the Dorr War campaigns in R.I. during the early 1840s.

Hartford: Oliver D. Cooke & Sons, 1823. First American from the Second London edition. 22 cm. vi, [2], 120, iv, [4], 216, 80pp. Period full flame calf, gilt stamped red morocco spine label and gilt rules. Ownership signature of [Israel] Balch dated August 29, 1823, on front endpaper. Balch's first name has been rubbed out leaving a hole in paper. An otherwise very good copy. Dr. Israel Balch (1788-1858) graduated from Dartmouth and moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts to study with Dr. French, and eventually established his own practice there. "He had the largest medical library in Amesbury or vicinity. He was a very successful practitioner of medicine and surgery.... Many young men sought his office for instruction in medicine and surgery, navigation and higher mathematics." [see: "Genealogy of the Balch Families in America," by Galusha Balch (Salem, MA: 1897), p. 424].

Graff 489: "Burkley was one of the pioneers of Omaha." Adams Herd 368. Original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth. Owner's inscription on front endpaper, else very good.

[Boston, MA: Dr. E. Hartshorn & Sons, 71 Blackstone St.], 1890. Broadside. 33 x 25 cm. Printed on buff paper, in various sizes and styles of type, including an illustration of a key to emphasize that the bitters were a "key to health." Text enclosed in a black border. These "purely vegetable" bitters "always cure Sallowness of Skin, Dulness [sic] or Dizziness of Head, Sick Headache, Bad Taste of Mouth, Weakness of Limbs, Weariness, Bad Sleep, Poor Appetite, and all Bilious Complaints." Price, dosage, and testimonials accompany the text. A few closed tears along margins, not affecting text. A very good example. Dr. Edward Hartshorn (1818-1906) received his medical degree from Harvard in 1840. When ill health caused him to retire from the practice of medicine, he began to produce pharmaceutical preparations. He and his sons manufactured various medicines in Boston from about 1878 on. [ATWATER 1577]. OCLC lists two copies: Univ. of Rochester Med. Ctr.; Library Co. of Phila.

[New Brunswick, NJ, 1900. Promotional brochure. Single sheet, folded. 29 cm. 4 pp. Illustrated. Short closed tear at lower page margins, but no loss, old fold lines. A very good copy. A "new edition" of this journal designed to introduce the reader to the "most wonderful medical remedy of the age, Dr. T.A. Dutton's Vegetable Discovery," a purely vegetable extract for the cure of scrofula, constipation, rheumatism, dyspepsia, and many other disorders which have their origin in the diseased state of the Blood. ATWATER S-378.5. OCLC lists three copies: Library Co. of Phila., Univ. of Rochester Med. Ctr., Univ. of Michigan. Duke Univ. has a similar copy, text differs.

The caption beneath the photo gives the names of the players, including Christy Mathewson. A promotional brochure for this experimental "single tax" community, offering recreational and resort activities to visitors. No listings found on OCLC. A good copy.

[Fairhope, AL: The Civic League, 1920. Buff paperwraps, covers illustrated with scenes of the harbor and beach (front) and golf links (rear). 8 1/2 x 15 1/2 cm. (16) pp. of promotional text and photo illustrations. Fairhope, founded as a single tax colony, was also a resort community offering fishing, golf, beaches, etc. No listings on OCLC. A summer visitor has annotated this copy in the margins of a few pages, saying she bought some china at a local shop, and noting that they went bathing on the beach one rainy afternoon: "Tied our wedding rings on - much fun!" Accompanying the brochure is a single sheet, folded, 8 x 15 cm. (4) pp., a promotional for the "Colonial Inn, Fairhope, Ala." [consisting of a photo illustration of the hotel, two pages of text, and a photo illustration of the sun parlor]. This promotional is annotated in the same hand: "This is where we were--"

Raleigh, NC: B. P. Williamson, 1890. Prospectus. 8vo. (4) pp., title leaf, two page detailed description of the colt, including pedigree with racing records of his forebears, physical attributes, and other information and salesmanship: "I look for him to be a great trotter and a great sire," and an invitation for viewing on the rear page. Not in Thornton and apparently not recorded on OCLC. Creased, as for mailing, else very good. Original printed self-wrappers. (10278).

Raleigh, NC: Fairview Farm (printed by the compiler), 1890. First edition. 8vo. (2), 27 pp. Describes 29 blood mares and colts for sale at the time the catalogue was issued. With an autograph pencil note concerning available trotters, initialed by Williamson in April, 1891, on an interior blank page; further annotated by him in pencil, with five of the 29 horses marked "Sold," another with a name correction, and with brief notes about ten more. At head of title: "1890." Thornton 4086. OCLC locates this catalogue only for the farm (North Carolina). Very good copy with manuscript additions by the farm owner. Original cream wrappers (soiled, creased as for mailing), printed in blue. (10277).

Graham (1886-1972), one of the great North Carolinians of the 20th century, served as president of the University of North Carolina, 1930-1949, as United States Senator from the state, 1949-1950, and in various United Nations posts, 1951-1967. Good copy. Original printed tan wrappers (soiled, spine starting to split), stapled. (10234).
