[London,: Engraved by George Cooke, London Published ... by W.B. Cooke 12 York Place Pentonville,, March 31, 1814].. 112 by 190mm (4.5 by 7.5 inches).. Prints,""Drawn on the Thames. Printing on ice Etching; imprint excised. The last Frost Fair took place between Blackfriars Bridge and London Bridge for four days at the beginning of February 1814. There was feasting, drinking, and activities such as nine-pin bowling, dancing, and swings. One of the highlights included an elephant being led across the river! On February the 5th, the fair ended when the ice began to break up, tragically resulting in several deaths. Since then, on account of the milder climate, the replacement of the Old London Bridge with a new one with wider arches, and the incremental embankment of the river, the Thames has not frozen over so completely as to allow another fair to take place upon it. During the fair, London's printmakers took advantage of the widespread enthusiasm and excitement it generated by producing souvenir…

[Weimar,: Friedrich Justin Bertuch,, 1803].. 140 by 90mm. (5.5 by 3.5 inches).. Prints,""Sam. Graf von Schmettau. Samuel Graf von Schmettau Stipple-engraved portrait. Samuel Graf von Schmettau (1684-1751) was a Prussian who began his military career by fighting in the battles of Blenheim and Malplaquet, continuing through the Austro-Turkish War of 1716-18, the wars of the Quadruple Alliance ((1718-20), the War of Polish Succession (1733-8), and the Russo-Austrian-Turkish War (1735-9). Retiring from military life at almost sixty years of age, Schmettau became a diplomat and served as a curator of the Academy of Sciences. Schmettau continued actively to educate himself, particularly in the field of cartography; in 1748, he created a four-sheet plan of Berlin widely regarded as the best of its time: 'Plan de la Ville de Berlin'. Schmettau's portrait, accompanied by his rank, and dates of birth and death written below, was engraved for Issue 11 of 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' by Conrad…

Description:
[Rome],: Claudij duchetti formis,, [c1580].. 312 by 437mm. (12.25 by 17.25 inches) (printed image).. Engraved map, with key below. A bird's-eye view of Florence taken from the north-west, showing the city encircled by the medieval walls with the river Arno flowing through and the hills in the background. The view draws upon the work of the Florentine Francesco Rosselli, who had produced a famous map of the city, 'the Chain Map' of Florence, in the second half of the fifteenth century. The work owes its name to the padlocked chain framing the view; the city is shown with a slightly altered urban layout, thus allowing for the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with its newly built dome by Brunelleschi, to be in the centre, and the façades of the monuments to be seen frontal. Duchetti probably follows a view of the city attributed to Paolo Forlani from 1567, repeating its errors and distortions and using the coats-of-arms of the Medici and of the city in the same positions. Born in France under the…

London,: Day & Haghe, Lithrs. to the King, [1832].. Image: 400 by 600mm (15.75 by 23.5 inches). Sheet: 545 by 720mm (21.5 by 28.25 inches).. Lithograph with original hand colour. The livery hall of the Fishmongers' Company was demolished in 1827 to make way for the construction of the new London Bridge. This print was presumably produced to celebrate the impending completion of the construction of the new hall. A competition was announced to find the architect, and 87 entrants applied. The eventual winner was Henry Roberts (1803-76), a British architect who had only set up his own practice two years before. The Fishmongers' Hall, which stands to this day (albeit damaged during the Second World War), is his best known work. William Day (1797-1845) and Louis Haghe (1806-85) formed a partnership which became one of the largest British lithographic firms of the nineteenth century, and was successful enough to gain a royal warrant in 1838. After William's death in 1845 the company was run by his son W.J.…

Allom's drawing for this print was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1844. It was reviewed in The Builder (1844). Curiously J.T. Willmore (one of J.M.W. Description:
[c.1746]. 440 by 830mm. (17.25 by 32.75 inches).. Manuscript plan on an irregular format made up of two sheets joined; original hand colour. The plan shows the developments to the fortifications around the eastern part of Brussells, thus where the Emperor's Palace is located. The left sheet has been added to the right one seeing as the title cites the Porte de Namur which is now in the middle of the plan. The key on the left foreground explains that the gate on the left hand side is the Porte de Louvain. The plan also presents two profiles: one of a fort with precise measurements and one of the covered paths. These are also highlighted in yellow to show that they have been completely repaired.

[Los Angeles],: Freak Out Productions,, 1966.. 585 by 737mm. (23 by 29 inches).. Chromolithograph map, with image and text to verso. Frank Zappa's guide map to Los Angeles' fledgling Freak Scene, listing places for freaks to eat, drink, dance, and shop. An advertisement for the present map appeared inside the gatefold album cover of early US pressings of 'Freak Out', The Mothers of Invention's 1966 debut studio album. It states that fans interested in procuring a copy of "the special map we have prepared" should send $1.00 to MGM studios in New York City. The ad is addressed to people who are planning on visiting L.A. that summer, and it promises that the map will tell you how to get to certain 'Freak-Out Hotspots,' such as Canter's Deli and Whisky a Go Go, as well as to warn you about places "where the heat has been busting frequently, with tips on safety in police-terror situations." Given the map's great rarity, it is apparent that few people actually sent in a dollar for the map. This lack of…
