Japan Self Published 1981, 1981. First edition, limited to 500 copies. Unpaginated. 47 colour plates. Black cloth with title and author stamped in English in silver on upper board and in Japanese on the spine. White card slip-case with a photograph on its front and the title and author printed in black in English and Japanese. Slip-case is protected by a plastic wrapper. Both book and case are in fine condition. The photographs in this, the last of Gocho's three published works were taken between April 1978 and October 1980. As with his other work, there is a sense of Gocho's detachment from the world around him, born in part perhaps from his own difficult circumstances. He was born in 1946 with a rare degenerative illness which prevented him from growing to full adult height; he was only four feet tall. A nice set in excellent condition. The first volume has the ownership inscription of Mrs George Holgate Foster (repeated as Mrs G.H. Foster on the front pastedowns of the other two volumes). Records show a George Holgate Foster and his family living at The Holme, Inner Circle, Regent's Park. He was the Chairman of the London Joint-Stock Bank. His job and his house (one of the grandest private residences in London) mark Foster out as the very antithesis of the idealistic and downwardly mobile Felix Holt. Stamp on title-page. A very good copy. Rylands annotations refer to a different catalogue entry for this book which has been attached to the front free endpaper with a paper clip. It states that the blue binding is more rare. He also has noted details about Justin McCarthy who was an Irish writer and politician and an MP from 1879-1900.

Twenty loose leaves (title page and nineteen black and white photographs) in a cream coloured board folder, spine in cream linen with a black and white photograph of a woman on the upper cover. Housed in a blue purpose made box lettered in gilt on the spine. There is some rubbing and wear to the folder itself and to the photograph on the cover. Plate 8 has a small closed tear to the left edge, plate 13 has a small tear to the upper left corner and a crease along the left edge and plate 20 has a small tear to the lower right corner and a crease the bottom edge. Otherwise, the plates are in very good condition. Sasha Stone (1895-1940) was born Alexander Steinsapir in Russia. Having settled in America in 1913, he served in the US Army during WWI. After his discharge, he worked as a sculptor in Paris and then a painter before turning to photography. This is Eugene Richards's first book. It was born out of his work with VISTA, (Volunteers in Service to America) which he joined in 1968. This was a government programme established as an arm of the so-called" War on Poverty." Following a year and a half in eastern Arkansas, Richards helped found a social service organization and a community newspaper, Many Voices, which reported on black political action as well as the Ku Klux Klan. This collection reflects the hardship of life together with the racial and political tensions in this desperately poor part of the southern states. 'Der Flagellantismus Als Literarisches Motiv' was published between 1929 and 1932 by pioneering German sexologist Ernst Schertel by his own Parthenon Verlag publishing company. Following the nazi seizure of power in 1933 all such publications were suppressed with many publishers and authors sent, at best, into exile, and, at worst, into the new 'Wild Camps' at Dachau and Sachsenhausen. A slightly ironic result considering some of the senior nazi figures' predilection for similar material (Goering and Streicher spring to mind). Original illustrated paper wrappers, slightly soiled and with repair and a little loss to the spine. Some foxing but overall a very good copy of fragile little book, rare in the wrappers. Robert Williams Buchanan (1841-1901) was a Scottish writer of some talent and contemporary success who is best remembered now for this work and the controversy surrounding it, especially his coining of the epithet "The Fleshly School of Poetry" to describe the work of Swinburne and Rossetti. The previous year, Buchanan had published his views on Rossetti in the Contemporary Review using a pseudonym. This led to outrage among the pre-Raphaelites and the 'outing' of Buchanan as the author. Undeterred, Buchanan revised and expanded the essay into this pamphlet, publishing it under his true name. Green buckram, maroon morocco label, lettered in gilt. Some marking and rubbing and a split to the cloth (c45mm) at joint with lower board. Some slight foxing in places but otherwise very good internally with the charming plates in particularly good condition. It is rare to find these coloured. One of the front preliminary leaves has two pages of neat manuscript notes listing plants from Abbot's book that are found in the "best natural pastures". Title page has ownership inscription of a "Mrs Jones". Front pastedown has armorial bookplate of F. Kuhlicke who was senior modern languages master at Bedford Modern School and an authority on Bedfordshire history. Flora Bedfordiensis has been described as a "model of a county flora", listing 1325 flowering plants and providing descriptions and details of where they grow. Beautifully printed in black and red. Interior is in excellent condition save for some modest spotting and discolouration to the end papers. This is a lovely copy of the full order of service for the coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the late Queen Mother), the 80th anniversary of which falls year. An interesting and scarce item.

Some slight rubbing to the boards but the catalogue itself and its delicate wrappers are in excellent condition. Rare, Worldcat locating only two copies, one in Denmark and the other in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. This modest little booklet listing the works of art displayed at Den Frie Udstilling in 1893, captures an important moment in European art: it records the public bringing together of the work of Gauguin and Van Gogh and it also marks a crucial step in the establishment of the reputation of Van Gogh. Vittorio Rieti (1898-1994) began his studies in his native Italy. He had links with Berg and Schoenberg and his early work was influenced by their atonal experimentation. Between 1925 and 1940 he divided his time between Paris and Rome and adopted a more tonal, neo-classical style, writing ballet music for Diaghelev. In 1940, he moved to America where he remained for the rest of his life combining composition with teaching. These Lawrence settings were composed for and dedicated to the Queens College Choral Society where Rieti taught between 1955 and 1960. A short note in "Box Office" magazine for July 30th 1979 reads: "Freezing Down will begin filming in November in Albany N.Y. as an Arthur Cohn production. Melvin Sokolsky is the director. The plot concerns a man's return to life after a cyrogenic suspension. Paul Mayersberg has written the screenplay based on the novel by Anders Bodelsen". There is, however, no trace of the film's having been made. Mayersberg's previous screenplays in the 1970s were Siddhartha and the cult science fiction film The Man who Fell to Earth, directed by Nicolas Roeg and starring David Bowie.
