F.O.C Darley Engraving "Native Californians Lassoing a Bear." D. Appleton and Co: New York, 1873. Measures 13 x 10 inches. Image shows three men on horses surrounding a large black bear. The animal crouches, its mouth open wide to bear its teeth, the horses eyes wild in response as the men pull back their reins. One man swings a length of rope to lasso the bear. Though the illustration is titled "Native Californians," the men are notably European, possibly Spanish conquistadors who were the first to colonize the state. Felix Octavius Darley was an illustrator made famous by his work with major authors including Charles Dickens and Edgar Allen Poe. Light dampstain to border does not affect image. Text beneath image with title, illustrator's name and publishing information. Overall good condition.

Hemingway, Ernest. A Farewell to Arms. New York: Bantam Books 1949. Contains 277 pages, 4" x 6.5." Classic 1940s cover illustration by C.C. Beall of an embracing couple, sitting beside a large window through which we can see a twilight sky. Tagline reads: "They stole love from a world afire." Lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield, this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its sweep. This pulp edition has bright and beautiful covers. Creasing to spine from when it was read; small crease at bottom corner; some of the glossy laminate is beginning to peel, still in very good condition.

La Dolce Vita. Directed by Federico Fellini. Archive of 4 Original Vintage Silver Gelatin Photographs used as Lobby Cards in movie theaters. Columbia Pictures, 1961. Each measures 8" x 10" and are matte, high-contrast, black and white. La Dolce Vita is a satirical comedy-drama starring Marcello Mastroianni as a tabloid journalist who, over seven days and nights, journeys through the "La Dolce Vita" of Rome in a fruitless search for love and happiness. It won the Palme d'Or at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Costumes. These Lobby Cards feature stills form the movie, including one of Anita Ekberg in her iconic black dress, and another with Ekberg and Mastroianni driving to the famed Trevi fountain scene. Captions list the title, stars and production credits for the film. A stamp on the verso of all three reads "Girosign Ltd." All 4 photos are in very good condition.

Fellini's La Strada. Archive of 5 original silver gelatin vintage photographs. All about 8" x 10" and black and white. La Strada is a 1954 Fellini film about a young woman who is sold to a brutish strongman and their journey on the road together. Fellini described the film as his most personal, adding it was "a complete catalogue of my entire mythological world, a dangerous representation of my identity that was undertaken with no precedent whatsoever." It won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The American Film Institute called it "one of the most influential films ever made", and it placed fourth in the British Film Institute's list of cinema's top 10 films. The archive includes three stills from the filmincluding a fight scene and have movie title and logos on margins. Also included is a press photo of Fellini with Anthony Quinn and Giulietta Masina with Associated Press stamp on verso. Archive is in very good condition.

Fellini's 8 1/2. Archive of 4 Original Vintage Lobby Cards. Embassy Pictures, 1963. Each measures 11" x 14" and are in pink, black and white. 8 1/2 was Felini's avant-garde surrealist film about a director who suffers from stifled creativity, a very personal film where the protagonist confesses that he wanted to make a film that was pure and honest, but he is struggling with something honest to say.. All 4 lobby cards feature iconic stills from the movie including its stars Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale. 8 1⁄2 was critically acclaimed and won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Small stains form old tape on verso, only affecting the white borders , not affecting the image themselves. Overall, in very good condition. The film ranked 7th in BBC's 2018 list of The 100 Greatest Foreign Language Films.

Delphian Society Correspondence Course (18 Hard bound books) The Delphian Society was a national organization that promoted the education of women in the United States. This organization was founded around 1910 in Chicago. the Delphian Society published the Delphian Course of Reading: "A systematic plan of education, embracing the world's progress and development of the liberal arts." The original volume course covers "history, literature, philosophy, poetry, fiction, drama, art, ethics, music," than developed to 18 volumes by 1929. the importance of the adult-education and self-culture movements and places the Delphian publications within the progressive milieu and the development of women's clubs. These publications were unique in the era, as no other texts, institutions, or organizations were devoted to women's education at the highest level or fostered deliberative social interaction and civic advancement. Original paper wrappers 9 x 6 in. 15 pages gently bound together center left edge. Pages are browned with small chips and creases at edges, scattered foxing and small liquid stains that do not affect the text. At the time that this description is being written, just two copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. The pamphlet includes the Constitution and Mission of the Constitution of the Charitable Society of Connecticut: "to furnish pecuniary assistance to...young men of piety and promising talents" who intend to pursue religious studies at Yale College. It also includes treasury reports from the group, and similar documents from The Female Education Society, which also sought to provide monetary assistance for young men pursing religious studies. Signed and inscribed by author. 26 full-page black and white illustrations, along with over a hundred smaller illustrations throughout. Comes with note inscribed by Mary French-Sheldon dated 1894. May French-Sheldon traveled to Africa to study the culture's evolutions in language and health; on her return to England she embarked on a lecture tour that promoted the valuable work of women in the sciences and used relics and remains to connect African and European cultures. Her book's inscription hints to the female recipient that reading about scientific adventures may draw other women to their own explorations: "let this be as a hook of steel." First edition with original pictorial cloth boards and fifty illustrations of pro-suffrage political cartoons. An uncommon text. 336 pages. Keith's tone is often tongue-in-cheek but his purpose is to promote women's suffrage. As he argues in the preface: "Is it not the man that is unwomanly, ans unmanly too, in strutting about as if he were the lord of creation? [..] Where is the consistency in allowing a woman to own property and take care of men's childrne and not giving her the power to protect either of them?" While some countries extended minor voting rights to women in the year of this book's publication, full suffrage would not be granted to American women until almost decades later. Two real photo postcards showing the female pioneer, gunfighter and silver miner known as Captain Jack. Early 1900s. Each measure 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Ellen Elliott, known as Captain Jack, moved to the American west from England in the 1860's. One image shows Elliott standing beside her burro with a small shingled cabin behind her, expression characteristically stoic. Writing on the card reads "Captain Jack at Home." Upon arrival in Colorado, Captain Jack ran a boarding house and discovered a profitable silver mine, engaged in gunfights and survived a tomahawk attack. As frontierswoman Ellen Elliott "Captain" Jack put it, "A .44 equalizes frail women and brute men.." Captain Jack could handle a gun. The female prospector, who made a fortune in silver mining, was arrested repeatedly for shooting men who tried to rob, cheat, or murder her, but the charges never stuck. [Women in Science] [Medicine] [Education]. A small archive of 15 silver gelatin photos kept by a female Johns Hopkins medical student in 1943. Each about 4.5" x 3.25" inches. Black and white. This set is special as it was taken during the nadir of 20th century female medical participation. The scenes depicted here are jovial, focused, familial. Several photos of lab instruments. One photo of one of the female medical students holding a lab rat and administering some fluid to it through a pipette. Pictured among them are their male contemporaries. Hopkins has been consistently ranked the top medical school in the country. Progressive women flocked to medicine in the decades leading to suffrage, but the numbers declined as the postwar era ushered a temporary reassertion of the "separate spheres." By 1960, women made up only 6% of physicians. Today, they are over 1/3 and comprise half of graduating classes. Large photo measures 24 x 20 inches. 40 subjects, every one of them male except for a single female student, listed below as "F Heflin." Photographed by Hays Studio. Mounted to photographer's board. The American Medical College, a medical school founded in 1873, graduated its first woman in 1888. In 1911 the American Medical College combined with the Barnes Medical College. The following year the combined school became the Medical Department of the National University of Arts and Sciences in St. Louis. The National University then merged with the St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons around 1915. Female students like this one would have come in at a significant disadvantage, proving her qualifications against skepticism in a field notorious for gender discrimination. A memorabilia, recording many aspects of the first major movement of women's education in the United States brings depth to a movement that was groundbreaking in its time, but today is largely at risk of disappearing from the historical record. 8.5 x 7.25 in. Gilt detail to spine and front cover. Filled with 36 entries, nearly all of which appear to be young women who are friends and schoolmates, including locations such as Holyoke and Northampton, Massachusetts, and several from New York and entries from Philadelphia, Chicago, and Colorado. A journal with two articles of feminist theory reexamining the work of Frederick Engels. Measures 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Marigold yellow soft cover pamphlet stapled with 50 cent mark in top corner and "no. 1" printed at bottom beneath title. These papers criticize the biases underlying Engel's milestone text, The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, revealing the limitations of Marxism within a patriarchal framework. The 1970s were a period of rapid growth for feminist theory with new scholarly attention turned to the role gender plays in shaping every aspect of human experience, including those limiting experiences of theorists like Engel. As feminist radicalism gained respect within scholarship, perspective on prominent texts shifted, too. Ink imprints from opposing pages do not obscure text. Text has been underlined in black in places. Very good condition.

Typewritten draft of the Bay Area Women's Liberation "Group-In" Feminist Program. 1969. This draft outlines the conference including notes from the organizers. Measures 8.5 x 14 inches. The conference's topic that year was "Function and Evolution of the Small Group" and this outline provides insight into the organizer's plan for implementation. "Many small groups in the Bay Area Women's Liberation have been meeting together periodically in the last several months, and have found these cross-group meetings to be very positive experiences," reads the introduction. "We have called this "group-in" in an attempt to expand the concept of the group, to encourage further cross-group and cross-area meetings, and to create a different kind of conference."
