The ‘sweet beef’ is more gross and greasy than ever, whilst his lady looks very charming and fascinating. The pair look like nothing else but a plat of fat boiling beef side by side to a delicate little entree of cotelettes d’agneau ...”

Montpelier Square, Brompton, 23 March 1848. 4 pp. 9 x 7 inches, in very good condition. The Rev. Dr John Morison (1791 - 1859) was a longstanding editor of the Evangelical Magazine & Missionary Chronicle, author of theological and biographical subjects, and a Congregational pastor at Trevor Chapel, Chelsea, London. He was known for his bold and fervid utterances on the platform, his enthusiastic advocacy of the work of the London Missionary Society, and support for the abolition of slavery in the USA. “A little circle of friends here all warmly attached to the London Missionary Society, have thought that the success of my son-in-law, Dr Legge, in the conversion of the three Chinese youths, who have soo beautifully sustained their Christian profession, was an event worthy of some specific memorial. Nothing so striking has hitherto occurred in the history of our Society.”
