A scarce medical treatise examining the health of women and girls in California, written by an English doctor who emigrated to that state in the 1870s. The introduction begins with the statement that "It is a matter of common remark that amongst the ladies of the Pacific Coast there is an unusual prevalence of disorders affecting the reproductive organs" (1); the rest of the book, then, sets out to explain the conditions unique to the state that were causing these ailments. The book contains chapters examining California women in the context of menstruation (and its disorders), puberty, the education of California girls in public and private schools, diet, exercise, hygiene, matrimony, pregnancy and labor, miscarriage, climate, and female dress.
