It went through numerous editions and was expanded several times during the eighteenth century. The charming woodcut illustrations are unsigned, as is the frontispiece. This edition is recorded in one copy only, at Harvard. There is no copy in England. STC notes: "The London part of the imprint is fake, probably printed at York. Contemporary tree sheep. . Twelvemo. With an engraved frontispiece and 196 woodcuts in the text, one to accompany each fable. Binding extremities lightly rubbed, some superficial cracks in spine. With two original leaves (16 1/2" x 11") laid in. The leaves in this copy are the text of "Fable IX Le GeaI Paré des Plumes du Paon" and its accompanying copper engraved plate. Monograph by Frances Brewer. Wrappers have minor light wear, else a fine copy in a slightly rubbed marbled board slipcase. Brewer's work provides a fascinating history of La Fontaine's life in addition to the beautiful Memorial Edition of his Fables, published approximately fifty years after his death. La Fontaine (1621-1695) was a contemporary of Charles Perrault and a member of the quarter "Rue de Vieux Colombier," famous in French literary history, which consisted of Racine, Boileau, and Moliére. London: Printed for Vernor, Hood, and Sharpe, 1810 Modern half calf, gilt, with black morocco spine label. Twelvemo. Copper-engraved frontispiece and numerous charming woodcuts in text. Frontispiece with some light dampstains in blank margins, nineteenth-century ownership signature on a preliminary blank. Overall a very good copy of an uncommon edition. The first edition of the William Coxe editing of Gay's Fables appeared in 1796. Curiously, all of the Coxe editions are scarce, with OCLC listing one or two copies of the first four editions, and five copies of the fifth and last edition, which was published in 1814.

Small octavo. Etched frontispiece, full-page etched title, and 2 etched plates (between pp. 50-51 and 88-89), all finely hand colored. With wood-engraved head- and tail-pieces throughout, some by Edward Townsend Hartshorn (1828 - 1900) and some signed "S. White." Some rubbing to gilt. Also lettered and stamped in gilt on spine. Neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. All edges gilt. Some toning to edges and some dampstaining to bottom margin. Some offsetting from plates. Newport R.I.: Printed at the Office of the Newport Mercury, 1807 First edition. Contemporary sheep with gilt spine label. Twelvemo. Some chipping and rubbing to sheep. Joints somewhat fragile. Largely a clean copy aside from some light occasional foxing. Two ink ownership signatures, one dated 1829 and one dated 1875, to front flyleaf. A very good, clean copy of this uncommon collection of letters. A collection of correspondence exchanged between two close friends, Sarah Osborn and Susanna Anthony, between 1740 and 1779. Osborn and Anthony were both devout Congregationalists — Anthony, in fact, broke with her parents' Quaker faith to join Osborn in the Congregationalist church. The two friends were also both teachers and abolitionists: the present collection includes Osborn's accounts of her experience teaching classes to the Black population in Newport, as well as letters exchanged between Anthony and the abolitionists Rev. Samuel Hopkins.
