The front cover has a very small light stain and a light scratch that measures 4 inches long. The edges of the covers are gently rubbed and bumped. There is a small pen mark on the bottom edge of the text block, and again on the bottom edge of the rear cover. The spine is very slightly rolled back. There are a couple of small creases in the title pages. The dust jacket is in very good condition. Heavily rubbed and scratched.Extra charges apply on this item due to weight. With raised bands and blind stamped title on spine, along with faded gilt stamped floral decoration. Lovely marbled textblock edges and endsheets. Mild scuffing to spine ends and edges of boards. Textblock is mildly foxed throughout. Half-title has a 2cm closed tear. Front hinge beginning to crack. A lovely French-language edition of La Fontaine's "Fables," with illustrations by Staal.

Additionally, the front board is decorated with a large blind stamped illustration of a lyre. Very light soiling to boards. Textblock is toned. Sporadic closed tears throughout have been unprofessionally backed with tape. Gutter also occasionally reinforced with tape. Heavily illustrated with elaborate wood engravings by Gustave Doré.

Detmold. 271pp. Quarto [27.5 cm] Green cloth over boards, lettered and pictorially stamped in gilt on the spine and front cover. Title page printed in red and black. Tissue guards with descriptive letterpress. There are areas of very faint moisture staining to the boards, and there are several small, dark stains on the backstrip. Internally, very clean. Complete, all plates present. In the paper cover box, with an illustrated paper label on the top of the box. The box is moderately soiled and abraded. Illustrated with lovely tipped-in color plates by E. J. Detmold. Charming and scientific stories of insect life.

The spines were professionally restored long ago, but have since sustained a bit of cracking along the joints. Red speckled edges. Text block of volume 2 cracked at the beginning; front pastedowns have a previous owner's bookplate; neat manuscript notations on the half titles; faint ink stamps on title pages; despite occasional light foxing, pages clean and bright. The text is in French and Latin. Jean de La Fontaine's first six books of fables were first published in 1668. Five more books followed in 1678-79. And a twelfth book was published in 1694. Fontaine's verse fables transformed traditional folktales into some of the most-loved poetic works in the French language.
