Shrewsbury, 1994, Airlife, First UK edition, hard bound in dust jacket, Fine/Fine condition, 7 x 10, 154 pages , many illus, index. This is a narrative history of the operational use of the legendary F-86 Sabre jet from its inception in the Korean War thru its later use by the USAF, RAF, Commonwealth & Pakistan in the post Korean War era. Korean War coverage is good, plus post wear coverage of the later F 100 Super Sabre and the F-107 prototype. ...............Throughout the 1950s, the distinctive wail of the North American F-86 Sabre was as familiar a sound in the skies of the free world as the crackle of the Rolls Royce Merlin had been a decade earlier. Most of all, the Sabre is remembered for its air superiority role in the Korean War, when, high over the Yalu River, it tangled with Russia's MiG-15 in the world's first jet-versus-jet combats close to the speed of sound. It was in the cut-and-thrust of high-speed air battle over Korea that the Sabre captured the imag ... Read more

FAERIE TALE

Feist, Raymond E

New York 1988, Doubleday, First US ed w/dj, 6x9, 420 pages, VG/VG condition. Clive Barker. . . Whitley Strieber. . . Peter Straub... their fathomless imaginations and brilliant storytelling powers have already made them living legends. Now Raymond E. Feist joins the ranks of these illustrious grand masters with a modern tale of exquisite terror, a spellbinding work about an ordinary world hellishly transformed. The town records have it as Elf King Hill, "Hill of the Elf King." But it's better known as the Old Kessler Place. A great ramshackle house, it stands among the deep woods of upstate New York, full of memories and myth. There are peculiar stories about the old homestead: talk of haunted forests, strange lights that dance like fox fire, buried treasure, and lost children, now long-forgotten. But for the Hastings family, the Old Kessler Place is the stuff of dreams. Gloria and Philip Hastings, their eight-year-old twins, Sean and Patrick, and Phil's teenage daughter ... Read more

Thames & Hudson, 1986, NY, First US edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, 192 pages, numerous illus & maps. VG /VG condition. (very minor dj edge wear).--------------------------------------------------- What caused the fall of Rome? Since Gibbon's day scholars have hotly debated the question and come up with answers ranging from blood poisoning to rampant immorality and excessive bureaucratization. In recent years, however, the most likely explanation has been neglected: was it not above all else a military collapse? Professor Ferrill believes it was, and sets out his case in this provocative book.------------------------------------------------------In the last decade of the fourth century AD one emperor - Theodosius - still ruled over an Empire larger than that of the great Augustus, and commanded a massive army of several hundred thousand men. Less than eighty years later, both Empire and army in the West had been wiped out. How did this happen? Barbarian invasions certainly played t ... Read more

New York 1965, St Martin's Pr, US 1st edition , hard bound w/dj, 6x9, VG/VG condition,( small prev. owners name stamp on front end papers) xiii, 458 pages, maps, notes, index. ---------------------------Louis Napoleon's Empire seemed to have reached a new peak of splendor when the Great Exhibition opened in Paris in April 1867. Glittering with pride, Paris preened herself before the admiring gaze of visitors from all corners of the globe. Yet within three years she was a city besieged: Bismarck's Prussians at her gates, the Emperor disgraced and in exile, his Empire little more than a dim memory. La Ville lumiere no longer sparkled, her lights extinguished from lack of fuel, her epicurean populace reduced to eating rats to keep from starving. When capitulation came it brought with it the harshest peace settlement ever imposed by one European state upon another. But worse was to come. There followed in March 1871 the bloody civil war forever to be associated with the name of ... Read more

London 1991, Brassey's, First English edition with dj, 6x9, FINE/FINE CONDITION, 264 pages, 10 maps, notes, index. ,...................................................................... A team of distinguished historians have reappraised the careers of eleven generals in the two world wars whose high reputations were shattered, or tarnished, by failure in command. Each essay places the subject in his operational and political context and reaches a verdict on whether the ignominy was deserved or not. For a few, like Samsonov and Mutaguchi, the contemporary appraisal is vindicated while for others, including Gough, Nivelle and Hobart, some mitigation can be offered, tempering the charge of absolute failure. The subjects are controversial figures and many of the battles and campaigns that were the occasion of disaster remain notorious examples of military incompetence in the popular imagination. Here the Dardanelles campaign of 1915 and the defence of France in 1939-40 are examined and the per ... Read more

University Of Nebraska Press, 1989. Lincoln, reprint of 1908 edition, hard bound in maroon cloth, no dust jacket as issued, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, FINE CONDITION, xix, 364 pages, illustrated. ....................................................... In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant sent O.O. Howard, widely known as the "Christian general", as an ambassador of peace to the western Indian tribes. Famous Indians Chiefs I Have Known is Howard's account of his journey. He tells of his peace agreement with the great Apache chief Cochise; describes his pursuit of Joseph and the surrender of the Nez Perce chief, who became his friend; and provides a poignant glimpse of the defeated Apache war leader Geronimo, selling canes and autographs. Equally impressive are his portraits of Winnemucca of the Piutes, the Sioux chiefs Red Cloud and Sitting Bull, and his descriptions of meetings with Washakie of the Shoshones, Pasqual of the Yumas, Antonio of the Pimas, Santos and Pedros of the Apaches, Manuelit ... THE FAR LANDS

Hall, James Norman

  • Quantity available: 1
Boston, 1950, Little Brown, Book Club edition w/dj, VG/VG , superb jacket painting in full color by Nicholas Mordinoff. The heroic people who settled the South The heroic people who settled the South Sea isles before history was written left a legend of their wanderings out of which ames Norman Hall has woven a novel of beauty and enchantment. No one but he could so completely capture the spirit of these magnificent people while telling the moving, exciting story of the love of a young chief and the daughter of his enemy. Maui, son of the Tongan chief, was suckled by the Koro mother of Hina when the Tongans arrived exhausted on the island of Kurapo. But the Koros worshiped the god of war, and they did not welcome the peace-loving Tongans. They merely suffered them to stay in a carefully restricted part of the island on condition that they use their remarkable skill in shipbuilding to keep the Koro warriors supplied with war canoes. Before he saw the Koro chieftain's daug ... Read more

Novato, 1993, Presidio,US first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 1/2 x 9 1/2, , Fine/Fine condition. 225 pages, maps, notes, bibliog, index. --------------------------------------------------------------A through study of how the Soviet Union's campaign in Afghanistan 1979-1989, was the catalyst that splintered the Soviet Union and led to its decline & fall. The Fateful Pebble explores the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan as a catalyst that helped trigger the most extraordinary political event of the 20th century, the self-generated collapse of the Soviet empire. At the dawn of the 1980s decade, the Soviet military machine seemed invincible and Moscow's expansionist designs unswervable. Intermediate-range SS-20 missiles were intimidating Western Europe, the Soviet ICBM force was at least the equal of America's, and, with the invasion of Afghanistan at the end of 1979, the Kremlin showed its willingness to project its power directly into a neighboring nonaligned country. ... FERRY COMMAND

McVicar, Don

Airlife Publishing Ltd., Shrewsbury, 1981. UK first edition, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, FINE/FINE CONDITION, 213 pages, well illustrated. AUTOGRAPHED EDITION - signed by the author to a collector, dated 1984, on title page. ------------------------------------As 1940 drew to a close, Britain still desperately lacked the equipment to carry an offensive war to the Axis Powers. Across the Atlantic the American aircraft factories were getting into full stride, producing fine aeroplanes, fully capable of measuring up to the heavy demands to be made on them in the European Theatre. But much of this valuable effort was to no avail. The marauding U-Boat packs were taking a savage toll of men and material. On the 10th November, 1940, seven Lockheed Hudsons, crewed by Canadian Pacific Air Services personnel, made a non-stop flight across the Atlantic, setting the foundation for what was to become the Royal Air Force Ferry Command, which, by V.E. Day, had delivered over 10,000 combat aircraft. ---- ... Read more

THE FIERY TRAIL: A Union Officer's Account of Sherman's Last Campaign.

Harwell, Richard, and Philip N. Racine, editors

Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1986. US first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 6x9, FINE/FINE CONDITION, 44 & 238 pages, illus, maps, notes, bibliog, index. ---------------------------------------------------Major Thomas W. Osborn was chief of artillery in the Federal Army of the Tennessee. His journal and letters were written during Sherman's campaigns from Atlanta to Savannah and through the Carolinas. Osborn's eyewitness account of the Civil War is significant particularly for its dispassionate social commentary and for his insights into Generals W.T. Sherman and O.O. Howard. The major was, as his remarks attest, a keen observer of officers, of the army rank and file, and their areas of operation. He soberly recorded the devastation and the reasons for the campaign. He also reflected the antipathy toward South Carolina that prevailed among the men and their commanders, writing with a strange mixture of admiration and contempt. He was continually fascinated by the ... Read more
