Each of the 150 full page reproductions of autograph manuscripts is briefly described and identified with the collection and callnumber for it, and a full transcription provided. Privately printed [for T.J.Wise], London, unauthorized first edition, 1896. Limited edition of 27 copies printed for T.J. Wise, all on Whatman handmade paper (the figure of 27 coming from the Ashley Library catalogue). Japanese vellum boards, gilt spine-title, 8vo,. 19 pp, frontispiece facsimile plate and one facsimile in the text. A private printing for the forger T.J. Wise, who owned the manuscript. Wise's Ashley Library device appears at the end and the volume is one of ‘'The Ashley Library Series of Privately Printed Books.' Wise sent Wrenn a copy in November 1896 and no doubt gave away or sold most of the remainder. Slater's 1914 Bibliography of Stevenson notes that "Several copies of this privately printed pamphlet have occurred for sale, though not recently".. The coverage is geographically very wide-ranging, and includes both separately published books and monographs and serial publications (though not bibliographies appearing in periodicals). Classified arrangement (an author index would have been valuable). Besterman's indication of the approximate number of entries contained in each work is particularly useful. A detailed study of Faraday's researches into the preparation and properties of alloy steels in 1819-1824. Describes the facilities at Faraday's disposal and the methods he employed, often quoting from Faraday's own words.Then the author explains in detail his researches on the contents of Faraday's box at the Royal Institution and on further specimens preserved at the Science Museum and a number of historic razors. Later chapters present a general appreciation of Faraday's metallurgicl researches, and an account of the later developments in alloy steels down to the 1930s. A Very Good bright copy.

He attended the local dame school and as a young man travelled to London to learn the trade of shoemaking. Years later he wrote The Farmer's Boy, a poem based on nostalgic memories of his youth. But he had no success with publishers until a barrister, Capel Lofft, from close to his birthplace in Suffolk, extended his patronage. Other backers included the Duke of Grafton, the Duke of York and even the Prince of Wales himself. The first edition was published in 1800 with great success.
