Printed by order of the Trustees, London, first edition, 1903. Cloth, 4to, 40 cm,. [iv], iii, [iii], 77 facsimiles on 50 plates, each with accompanying text leaf, 19, pp index facs. This volume continues, in modified form, a work which was begun in Facsimiles of Ancient Charters in the British Museum, Parts I-IV, 1873-1878, by providing a selection, covering as wide a field of interest as possible, of charters from 1066 to the end of the 12th century. From the Preface: "The unique value of such records for the light which they throw upon legal antiquities. local and family history, and other kindred subjects is beyond question, and, although for some purposes the printed text only might suffice, the further advantage to students of palaography and diplomatics of a chronological series of typical examples in facsimiles is equally obvious.". An ex-library copy with a small sticker on the spine, a library bookplate and consultation record and stickers on the front pastedown endpaper, numbers…

Description:
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, first edition, 2001. Laminated illustrated wrappers, 8vo, 24 cm. x, 237 pp,. From the blurb - "Literary forgeries are usually regarded as spurious versions of genuine literature. Faking Literature argues that the production of a literary forgery is an act that reveals the spurious nature of literature itself. Literature has long been under attack because of its alliance with rhetoric (the art of persuasion) rather than with logic and ethics. One way of deflecting such attacks is to demonise literary forgery: literature acquires the illusion of authenticity by being dissociated from what are represented as ersatz approximations to the real thing. Ken Ruthven argues that literary forgery is the creative manifestation of cultural critique. As a powerful indictment of dubious practices in such activities as literary criticism, book-reviewing and the awarding of literary prizes, literary forgery merits serious attention from cultural analysts, and should be a…

Privately printed [for T.J.Wise], London, unauthorized first edition, 1896. Limited edition of 27 copies printed for T.J. Wise, all on Whatman handmade paper (the figure of 27 coming from the Ashley Library catalogue). Japanese vellum boards, gilt spine-title, 8vo,. 19 pp, frontispiece facsimile plate and one facsimile in the text. A private printing for the forger T.J. Wise, who owned the manuscript. Wise's Ashley Library device appears at the end and the volume is one of 'The Ashley Library Series of Privately Printed Books.' Wise sent Wrenn a copy in November 1896 and no doubt gave away or sold most of the remainder. Slater's 1914 Bibliography of Stevenson notes that "Several copies of this privately printed pamphlet have occurred for sale, though not recently".. Barker & Collins in "Sequel to An Enquiry" record that 16 copies were sold at auction between 1897 and 1920 and conclude that the volume is "a patent piracy, regularly marketed with the…

The coverage is geographically very wide-ranging, and includes both separately published books and monographs and serial publications (though not bibliographies appearing in periodicals). Classified arrangement (an author index would have been valuable). Besterman's indication of the approximate number of entries contained in each work is particularly useful. Later half-calf and marbled boards, early backstrip laid down on spine, 4to,. xvi, 102, 37, [1] pp (lacking final blank). The second item is "Dedicated to Dr. Edward Jenner, as the discoverer, and to the members of the Royal Jennerian Society, as the promoters, of vaccine inoculation". Robert Bloomfield (1766-1823) was born and died in poverty, but in the middle of his life he shot to prominence as something of a literary meteor, with the publication in 1800 of his 'The Farmer's Boy', which went on to sell some 26,000 copies in less than three years and to be translated into French, Italian and Latin hexameters. His reputation grew further with subsequent…

Terence Dalton Limited, Lavenham, first edition, 1971. Cloth, 8vo, 22 cm,. 144 pp, 23 ills. From the blurb - "Robert Bloomfield was born in Suffolk of a humble background. He attended the local dame school and as a young man travelled to London to learn the trade of shoemaking. Years later he wrote The Farmer's Boy, a poem based on nostalgic memories of his youth. But he had no success with publishers until a barrister, Capel Lofft, from close to his birthplace in Suffolk, extended his patronage. Other backers included the Duke of Grafton, the Duke of York and even the Prince of Wales himself. The first edition was published in 1800 with great success. By the seventh edition in 1803 more than 30,000 copies had been sold. Other poems followed and many are worthy of serious consideration: Bloomfield died at Shefford, Bedfordshire, in 1823, after years of ill-health. In this book many of his poems are published again, as well as samples of both his prose and plays. Very Good in a dustwrapper…

Longmans, Green and Co. Ltd, London, first edition, 1968. Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm,. [3], 286 pp, 8 plates, ills. From the text - "[Horne] was an oddity in personal appearance and literary career; a diverting paradoxical little Bohemian. For a mere seven years he had written with a 'fugitive vitality' that had culminated in a brief burst of fame in his forty-first year when he published his epic poem Orton and sold it for a farthing. But for the following forty years he was no more than an 'inspired scribbler', 'a curious and pathetic literary phenomenon'. At the time of Horne's death in 1884, his obituaries had predicted that 'so strange and vivacious a personage will surely not lack a biographer' but they were underestimating the waning interest in the Victorians. Moreover there were those like Gosse who argued that to explain the disparity in standard between Orion and the rubbish Home had poured out at the end of his life 'was beyond all skill of the…
