Signed by the author on the title page, without inscription. The autobiography of this Norwegian immigrant, who went to Lutheran seminary and later worked in the publishing business. Signature of author W. P. Hieronymus to the front free endpaper, likely the book's original recipient. (His book "At the Feet of the Master", was published by Friend just the year before.) Bookplate of Norwegian-American collector Herman Gimmestad to the front pastedown. The text is clean and unmarked. The cloth shows only a hint of edgewear. Reykjavik: A Kostnad Sigm. Gudmundssonar, 1884. Soft cover. Very Good-. Icelandic language (at least we suppose so - it's difficult to differentiate from Norwegian and Danish). Bound in the original printed wraps; 76 pages. An Icelandic saga of medieval origin. Signed by the publisher, Sigm. Gudmundsson, to Professor Rasmus B. Anderson, one of the era's preeminent Norse researchers and a professor of Scandinavian Languages at the University of Wisconsin (Madison). The rear wrap carries other titles by this publisher. The wraps have been reinforced at the spine with an old-fashioned cloth tape, which appears to have kept this fragile volume together over the years. The outer wraps show mild toning and are slightly chipped at the edges. Internally the paper shows only faint toning and is not brittle; there is a slight bump at the upper corner. The book, however, has the feel of an unread volume (the cover opens only to 45 degrees before becoming quite tight). The jacket is now in mylar. Scarce signed.

Ex-library from Gale College, Wisconsin, where the owner's father was once president of the school. With the bookplate of Norwegian-American collector Herman Gimmestad to the front pastedown; there is a gift inscription to the college on the front free endpaper, along with several library stamps to the prelims. The spine also has library markings, along with a faint "Vol XVIII" handwritten to the leather. The boards are edgeworn and rubbed; the leather spine is rubbed at head and heel and a bit scuffed. Hinges solid; binding square. Uncommon in this edition.
