The Garbely Publishing Company, 2023. Softcover. New. Softcover, 100 pages, 8.5 x 11 in., B&W and Color images. In 1868, the Buffalo Creek Railroad was incorporated as the first terminal railroad in the United States. Designed to tap into the growing grain milling business and Lake Erie commercial traffic, this five-mile railroad, concentrated entirely in Buffalo, New York, became the busiest terminal railroad of its size by the early 20th century. Even though the railroad's service became synonymous with Buffalo's grain milling and flour industry, it also served a significant amount of the chemical and oil business in the area. While its operations were locally confined, the Buffalo Creek was widely known in the railroading community by its vast fleet of 40-foot boxcars, used to transport Buffalo's grain products to locations as far away as Mexico City and Vancouver. This book covers the railroad's inception through the end of its steam era and into the early diesel era.

Description:
Signature Press. Hardcover. New. The basic story of the Overseas Railway to Key West, an extension of the Florida East Coast Railway, has been told before, from the early dream of Henry Flagler, to completion of railroad construction near the end of Flagler's life, to destruction of the extension in the devastating Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. But there is much more to tell. The core of this book is the collection of photographs made by William Asa Glass, one of the construction engineers on the project. His views, many never duplicated elsewhere, show both the engineering and human sides of the great project in a unique way. Supplementing it are the recollections of many who were there. In combination, it makes a vivid and engrossing story, rich in unfamiliar details. Also included here is a retrospective of the route today. Henry M. Flagler conceived the idea of a railway to Key West at least as early as 1895, and after a number of setbacks, the Overseas Railway was completed in 1912. It then…

Description:
White River Productions. Hardcover. New. This book was a massive project by the author and includes B&W photographs from the early days, Color photographs from the later days and color maps to help tell the story of Georgia-Pacific and its railroads. ForestRails is a story of railroads and the role they played in the growth of Georgia-Pacific, a major forest products company. From the early beginnings, railroads have been absolutely essential in the delivery of raw materials and shipment of finished products of the forests. Such was the case with Georgia-Pacific's railroads. Just as man does not live on bread alone, railroads could not survive without freight to haul. Thus it is necessary for this story to also tell the parallel stories of G-P's acquisitions that included the railroads. This story is an important part of American business history. By 1900 lumbermen had recognized the efficiency of a steel wheel on a steel rail and the number of logging railroads grew rapidly. The coming of the…

Description:
Central Electric Railfans Association. Hardcover. New. CERA Bulletin No. 149 Iowa was known as the ""Land of the Steam Road Trolleys."" Many of the state's interurban railroads had once been steam locomotive short lines and were built to standards that permitted operation of impressively large cars and significant carload freight interchange with the steam railroads. Largest of the Iowa interurbans was the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern Railroad, a feisty line that managed to survive in spite of heavy steam railroad and highway competition. Its passenger service lasted until 1955 and the diesel locomotive powered remnant was acquired by the Chicago & North Western Railroad in 1968. Noted railroad author Don Hofsommer chronicles the history of this long-lived interurban and masterfully captures the spirit of the times in which it operated. Central Electric Railfan's Association, hardcover, 224 pages with 265 photographs and 50 other images with roster, maps, and car drawings.

Santa Fe Railway H&M Society, 2022. Hardcover. New. The contents page of this book is missing page numbers for some of the chapters. A corrected, but separate, title page is included which shows the page numbers. Hardcover, 132 pages, 8.5 x 11 in., B&W photographs There haven't been too many books published regarding the hard-working men of the railroad maintenance-of-way work and life. This is a good title regarding the life and times from a southwest US and Santa Fe experience. Naylor, a track maintenance and construction supervisor for the Santa Fe Railway in New Mexico from 1921 to 1961, upon his death left a fascinating story of his time with the railway. He was an on-the-ground eyewitness to many of the changes on the Santa Fe, making this book a time capsule for both early railroading and life in New Mexico. His narrative provides rare glimpses into the hard life of a railroad track gang working as well as his difficulties as a supervisor and married man with family responsibilities. Naylor…

Southern Pacific H&T Society. Hardcover. New. Much of the book includes the many short lines - most of them logging - operating steam locomotives in the west during the period just after World War II through the 1950s. If you want to see logging locomotives in color, this is a great book. Many color photographs of Southern Pacific steam locomotives finish out the book. There are a few pictures of other mainline steam, but this is a book about the many short lines and the Southern Pacific including the SP narrow gauge. In the early 1950s many railroads were still operating steam locomotives on the west coast of the United States. Charles Givens was there to photograph them in operation. Come along on this pilgrimage to see mainline steam on the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and Western Pacific plus the many logging short lines that connected with the major railroads such as the Arcata & Mad River.
