Oil on paper (25.34 x 18.0 cm). = This unique image of the Niagara Falls from below is reminiscent of the 1810 View of the Great Pitch from Below, engraved by George Cooke after a sketch by A. Wilson (see Dow). However, this view is made even more dramatic by showing a long overhanging ledge, with some tiny figures - apparently a family with a child - on top. More tiny people are standing below the cliff, close to the torrent, emphasizing the magnificence of the falls. In this, the present painting is much closer to Frederick Christian Lewis's (1804) A View of the West Branch, of the Falls of Niagara: Taken from the Table Rock, Looking up the River, over the Rapids, which shows two, similar ledges (one was known as Table Rock - it collapsed partly in 1818, and entirely in 1850). Original printed wrappers. = A well-illustrated paper by the Dutch zoologist Jan [Janus] Adrianus Herklots (1820-1872). Several plates are printed in sepia. Published in volume 9 of the society's Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde. The oversized wrappers a bit frayed at edges; the text leaves and plates fine, except for some minor spotting. An excellent copy. Otherwise a near mint copy.

Ca. 800 pp.; numerous illustrations. = A peculiar, ephemeral series, with all kinds of information for echinoderm biologists. "The newsletter is not intended to be part of the scientific literature and should not be cited, abstracted, or reprinted as a published document" (as stated on the front page of each issue. This serial was published almost yearly, as follows: 14 (1985), 15 (1986), 15 [SIC!] 1989, 16 (1991), 17 (1992), 18 (1993) and 20 (1995). Lawrence was editor of the first six volumes, Ahearn of the last two. One issue with some damage to the lower edge, otherwise fine. Rare.

Original printed wrappers. = An important contribution to the knowledge of starfish and sea urchins, by the leading specialist during the late 19th and early 20th century, Jean Baptiste François René Koehler (1860-1931). Includes the description and illustration of many new and rare species. The Kerguelen group is situated in the southern part of the Indian Ocean. Published as part of the Annales de l'Institut Océanographique. Uncut. A very good, clean copy. Published during WWI and very uncommon. Not in Nissen.

F. Lütken, T. Lyman, and J. H. Théel. The first four parts of six published. Stamps on front free endpaper rectos, half-titles and titles, otherwise a very good, clean set.

The name The Echo was dropped after volume six. A very good set.

Red edges. = First German translation of the first mineralogical book by a British author. It deals with gemstones, and other interesting minerals. In London, it was published three times - in 1652, 1653, and 1659 - each time with a different title. Little is known about the author, Thomas Nichols. Printed label of the Henry Polissack Collection on the front pastedown. Japanese paper reinforcement in the gutter between endpapers and text block, binding simple. A good copy. Spine with morocco label with gilt title. = A nice copy of the rare first edition of this authorative and well-illustrated book on mineralogy and in particular gemology by the German mineralogist and professor at the Universities of Königsberg and Marburg, Max Hermann Bauer (1844-1917). Showing raw and cut minerals. This work went through several editions. Rebacked. Very light, marginal spotting to the endpapers and frontispiece, otherwise a very good, clean and unmarked copy. Uncut. Spine end covers chipped, otherwise a very good copy. Rare.

Engraved title page; five pp. 19th-century marbled wrappers. = A very rare pamphlet in which the anonymous author questions a truce between the Netherlands and Spain. "The Twelve Years' Truce was the name given to the cessation of hostilities between the Habsburg rulers of Spain and the Southern Netherlands, and the Dutch Republic, as agreed in Antwerp on 9 April 1609 (coinciding with the Royal Decree of Expulsion of the Moriscos). It was a watershed in the Eighty Years' War, marking the point from which the independence of the United Provinces received formal recognition by outside powers. For Spain, the truce was seen as a humiliating defeat as they were forced to make several sacrifices but they scarcely got anything in return" (Wikipedia).
