Description:
London: John Murray, 1909. First edition. 8vo. viii, 109, [1], [2, ads] pp. Publisher's pictorial cloth; small tear to head of spine, some toning and spotting to covers, endpapers foxed, bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown First edition of Sir George Sitwell's classic celebration of the gardens of Tuscany, Rome and the Italian lake district more philosophical treatise than manual of plant care and practical garden design. Before the final overthrow of the Picturesque in the twentieth century, English Romantics looked once more to Italy, perceiving in its decayed villa gardens a certain kind of landscape poetry. Perhaps the most Romantic analysis of Italian villa gardens was by the early-twentieth-century English aesthete Sir George Sitwell (1860-1943), who devoted an entire chapter to its analysis in On the Making of Gardens (Rogers, et al, Romantic Gardens, p. 30)

Stevens (1855-1940), who supplied the plans and drawings illustrated here, was a major innovator of the Shingle Style. He was prolific, completing some 1,000 commissions, mostly along the Maine coast, including approximately 300 homes on the Portland peninsula. In 1888 he formed a partnership with Albert Winslow Cobb, who had previously worked at the Boston office of William Ralph Emerson, another major innovator of the Shingle Style. Cobb, who provides the text, argues for the Shingle Style as a necessary reform to produce a… Read More

Description:
Halleck (1790-1867) was one of the most popular American poets in the first half of the 19th century and the only American to be honored with a statue in Poet's Row in Central Park. Recent scholarship has contextualized Halleck as an early gay American poet, whose relationship with fellow poet and collaborator Joseph Rodman Drake formed the basis for Bayard Taylor's 1870 novel Joseph and his Friend cited by some as the first gay American novel. (See Hallock, The American Byron: Homosexuality and the Fall of Fitz-Greene Halleck, University of Wisconsin Press, 2000.) Born in Guilford, Connecticut, Halleck moved to New York in 1811, and in 1813 formed an intimate relationship with Drake. In 1819 the men became literary stars when they published "The Croakers," a series of poems satirizing prominent New Yorkers; Halleck followed this up in 1819 with Fanny, a poem satirizing New York's nouveaux riches which went through several life-time editions; Alnwick Castle and other poems appeared in 1827, featuring… Read More
