Philadelphia, PA: J. H. Butler & Company, 1871. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original binding of pebbled stamped boards with leather to spine. The exterior of this copy (we have several listed) also shows scuffing and spotting along with edge and corner bumps/wear, although the leather shows a bit more wear. The internal binding is overall good, no hinge issues. The only handwriting found in the book is on the second front end page where the original owners name is signed along with an 1877 date (in pen). There are no library markings, no other handwriting, no bookplates. Pages are toned due to age but there is only light foxing and spotting present. Please note: at the time of this listing we had several copies available, each one has been listed separately with their own description and photos.

Hardcover, original binding of pebbled stamped boards with leather to spine. The exterior does show some scuffing and spotting along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The internal binding is overall good although there is some pulling and spots. The only handwriting found in the book is on the second front end page where the original students name is written in pencil (Ida Devilbliss). There are no library markings, no other handwriting, no bookplates. Pages are toned due to age and foxing is present throughout along with a couple small creases for the corners were folded over at one time. Please note: at the time of this listing we had several copies available, each one has been listed separately with their own description and photos.

Frank Charles Schrader (1860-1944) of Harvard and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) was a well-known and respected American geologist, mineralogist, and entomologist, and author. He was known throughout the west as the prospector's friend and was also one of the first federal geologists to explore Alaska. The cover shows sunning as well as some light soiling. It was the present of Westinghouse and was part of the appeal process for Mr. Hines. The very first letter in the book (page 3) is addressed to Mr. Humphrey. The pages are clean and binding is tight. No signatures or bookplates, no handwriting or underlining. Errata sheet is still present and attached to the title page.

First edition thus with single date of 1865 on both the copyright and title page. There is a brief inscription by the author: "Dr. G. W. Davis with regards of S. S. Cox. 1865, Aug 23". There's also a bookplate on the front pastedown bearing the name of a different owner. No other handwriting noted. Binding secure, no torn or loose pages, no hinge cracks noted. Book exterior is worn and soiled. Spine is very faded and shipped and top of spine has a tear in the hinge, to the right of the title. The exterior page edges show spotting and are a little rough, likely caused by insects. This deterioration is only noted on the exterior and does not carry into the pages inside. See photos.
