Hardcover, original binding of pebbled stamped boards with leather to spine. The exterior of this copy (we have several listed) also shows scuffing and spotting along with edge and corner bumps/wear, although the leather shows a bit more wear. The internal binding is overall good, no hinge issues. The only handwriting found in the book is on the second front end page where the original owners name is signed along with an 1877 date (in pen). There are no library markings, no other handwriting, no bookplates. Pages are toned due to age but there is only light foxing and spotting present. Please note: at the time of this listing we had several copies available, each one has been listed separately with their own description and photos.

Softcover, original 1912 publication with original wraps - not a modern reprint or rebound library copy. Front and rear cover contains the name stamp of F. C. Schrader. Frank Charles Schrader (1860-1944) of Harvard and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) was a well-known and respected American geologist, mineralogist, and entomologist, and author. He was known throughout the west as the prospector's friend and was also one of the first federal geologists to explore Alaska. The cover shows sunning as well as some light soiling. Front wrap is missing a small section of the bottom right corner and rear cover has numerous large tears, creases and chipping along outside edge. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. Exterior is clean with only the slight edge bumping of the lower outside corner. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. The book has the appearance that it was hardly used, if any. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no remainder marks, no handwriting found. There is a small brown spot on the top exterior page edge near the spine. This small spot might be nothing more than where a small dab of glue sat and darkened the page edge.

Exterior shows spotting and soiling, including red spots, and spine is sunned. Interior text pages are tight and only hinge issue is at the front board or openings are starting up near the top and rear hinge is fine. Pages are likely tone due to age. Signatures or bookplates, no handwriting or library markings found.

Hardcover, red cloth boards show minor spotting and handling wear, exterior page edges also show some spotting, particularly along the top. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. There are no signatures or bookplates, no handwriting, no library markings, nothing torn or loose or marked up. Pages are toned due to age but are overall clean although the end pages and pastedowns show foxing around the edges which can also be seen to a lesser degree on the last index page.

New York: G. W. Dillingham Company, 1900. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos or condition details. Hardcover, red cloth boards decorated in gilt on front and spine. Exterior shows edge and corner bumps and wear, spine is quite signed and rear board has numerous scratches. Internal binding is good, hinges are intact at front and rear boards. Pages are toned due to age and some minor foxing is present. There's a hint of webbing showing at page 146. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings present.

Boston, MA: Lothrop Publishing Company, 1878. Hardcover. Good+. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, green cloth boards decorated on front and spine. Exterior shows spotting and sunning, particularly on the spine area. Edges and corners mildly bumped/worn. Internal binding is good except for a small crack starting at the rear board, which measures about an inch and 1/2 at the bottom. The front end page contains a 1917 Christmas gift inscription. No other handwriting noted, no bookplates, no library markings. Text pages have mild scattered foxing but the end pages and pastedowns, as well as the pages surrounding the frontispiece, show more spotting and foxing and the rest. Softcover, original publication in original wraps. This is the January, 1854 issue in the front cover states "to be continued quarterly" along with a price of six shillings. Front cover is detached but present, and both covers have chipping along the edges and corners. Front cover has the faint penciled signature which appears to read P. N Riggs. Internal binding is mostly tight though fragile and there is a section in the front that is held on only by a single thread of binder string and nearly all of the page quadrants still uncut along the top and fore edges - showing this book was never even read. Exterior is in very rough shape with dampstains to both boards and spine, front board also has damage to center which feels like it may be from glue. Corners and edges also show bumps/wear. Spite the rough exterior interior text pages are good, though hinge is cracked at rear board and title page. Pages are toned due to age scattered foxing in smudge marks are present. Exterior shows spotting and soiling and foxing is present on exterior page edge textblock. Top edge is darkened. Interior binding is good, no hinge issues and text pages are tight. Paper is toned due to age but pages are clean. Inscribed and signed by the author on the front end page: "To Donald H. Mugridge from the Author, Nelson R. Burr. July 21st, 1942". Donald H. Mugridge was a noted historian and specialist an American history at the Library of Congress as well as an author and editor. No other handwriting found in the book, no additional signatures, no bookplates, no library markings.

Dark green cloth boards with gilt title on spine. Text is faded on spine and exterior shows spotting as well as edge and corner wear. Exterior page edges are darkened and there's a small ink spot on bottom of book. Interior pages are toned due to age but binding is good. No hinge cracks, no torn or loose pages. Front end page shows very faint evidence of something once written in red pencil, possibly a name, but it has been erased. 1922 printing.

Chicago, IL: Edward Hines, 1912. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, green cloth boards with gilt to front. Exterior is clean and still shiny with only minor scuffing. Rear board shows corner bumped at top edge. Front is also stamped with the name "A. L. Humphrey". This was Mr. Humphrey's personal copy. It was the present of Westinghouse and was part of the appeal process for Mr. Hines. The very first letter in the book (page 3) is addressed to Mr. Humphrey. The pages are clean and binding is tight. No signatures or bookplates, no handwriting or underlining. Errata sheet is still present and attached to the title page.

Exterior has numerous pronounced white spots on boards and spine. Edges and board show minor handling. Internal binding is in much better shape: binding is tight and pages are clean like book was never read. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, handwriting, or underlining found. End pages do shows some spotting from foxing. Copyright page states 1971 reprint. Interior grades as fine condition but exterior grades as just G+ because of the spots.

Hong Kong: Swindon Book Company, 1972. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG+/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. DJ shows scuffing spotting with the edges showing some bumps in very small creases. Red cloth boards underneath are clean and bright and the only reasons this book is not listed as fine condition is because is a very small spot on the upper half of the front board and the bottom edge and corners show bumps and a dent. Internal binding is good and the text pages are tight like the book has never been read. There are no signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting, no remainder marks, nothing torn or smudged. The end pages in front and rear have a pink design which has faded due to reacting with the dust jacket over the decades.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1865. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardcover, original binding. Blue cloth boards blindstamped with gilt on spine. First edition thus with single date of 1865 on both the copyright and title page. There is a brief inscription by the author: "Dr. G. W. Davis with regards of S. S. Cox. 1865, Aug 23". There's also a bookplate on the front pastedown bearing the name of a different owner. No other handwriting noted. Binding secure, no torn or loose pages, no hinge cracks noted. Book exterior is worn and soiled. Spine is very faded and shipped and top of spine has a tear in the hinge, to the right of the title. The exterior page edges show spotting and are a little rough, likely caused by insects. This deterioration is only noted on the exterior and does not carry into the pages inside. See photos.

Pages are mildly toned due to age but are clean.

Hardcover, original dark red cloth boards half bound in leather two corners and spine. The exterior shows heavy wear to the edges and corners in the spine shows a very old reinforcement of a thick textured material. Dark brown end pages in front and rear are free of any handwriting or bookplates, no library markings, no signatures. The text pages themselves are tight but there is a large opening at the first title page and it is possible the black reinforcement on the outside of the book may be the only thing holding the front board on. There is also a split at one of the rear end page areas.
