A highly detailed and decorative map of Europe by Johann Matthias Haas and published by Homann Heirs. A large and elaborate cartouche upper left. The "stereographic projection" shows Europe depicted on a plane, rather than spherical, thus disorting distances.

Included with this is a 4 pp. letter from the author Kingsford to John Reade (1837-1919), a journalist who became literary editor of the Montreal Gazette in 1870. Reade also published a book on poetry and contributed to many literary publications. The letter dated at Ottawa 1896, and discusses among other things a recently published book "Les Patriots

Illustrated throughout. 4to, wraps, slightly soiled at foot of front wrap, name to title page else very good. Still the definitive reference on early Canadian furniture.

James Sowerby was an English Naturalist who published works on Botany, Mineralogy and Paleontology. He achieved widespread success not only as an illustrator but as a recognized scientist, classifying mineral descriptions and identifying botanical species. His illustrations were included in James Edward Smith's "A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland Hand", "Mineral Conchology of Great Britain " and Curtis's "Flora Londinensis". His English Botany was published in 267 monthly parts over a period of over 23 years.

Spine dusty and bumped, boards scufrfed, else very good. Introduced by S.L. Bensusan, the author takes us on a journey through Turkey, on to Cyprus and on to the Middle East including Palestine, the Dead Sea, Jerusalem, Egypt, Gaza, Damascus and Lebanon.
