Description:
Basel: Adam Petri, 1519. FOURTH PRINTING (in the year of the first). Hardcover. Fine. Modern marbled wrappers. Lightly damp-stained, a few side-notes shaved. With an ornamental woodcut title border. A German translation, attributed to Spalatin, of an early Latin work by Luther on confession. In 1518 Spalatin had requested that Luther write a short instruction on how to confess. Luther sent him a Latin version of the present tract on January 24, 1519. The Latin original, apparently untitled, was not published. Luther later developed the text into his "Confitendi ratio," ("A Rationale of Confession"), which was issued in March, 1520. "[Luther wrote a series of tracts after posting the 95 Theses on October 31st, 1517, and before his final breach with Rome. In them is clearly traceable the progress that he was making in dealing with the practical problems offered by the confessional, and which had started the mighty conflict in which he was engaged. They open to us an insight into his own… Read More

Description:
Nuremberg: Gedrückt zu Nürnberg durch Friderich Gutknecht, 1554. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. The first work was first printed in 1535 as "Eyn new gedichte von den Schmeichlern"( VD16 S 478). The third fable appeared as a broadside ca. 1540 (Weller 82, not in VD16). I have been unable to trace an earlier ed. of the second fable. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in modern vellum over boards (soiled, slightly bowed). The text is in very good condition with a little light dust-soiling, a few small spots on the final two leaves, and soiling to the verso of the final leaf. With two woodcut illustrations and a fine woodcut ornament on the final leaf. No copies traced in North America. Hans Sachs' reworkings of three traditional fables, two by Aesop ("The shepherd flatters the wolf" and "The hares and the frogs"), and one ("the envious man and the miser") by the Latin fabulist Avianus. The first woodcut shows the devious wolf hiding in his cave. The second shows the miser and envious man having their eyes gouged out.… Read More

N.p. [France]: No printer [by the artist], 1900. FIRST STATE (of two), before the addition of the artist's signature in the plate. Hardcover. Fine. All plates in fine condition, with some glue residue on the versos at the upper corners (probably from earlier mounting), far from the images. One sheet lightly spotted. Housed in a modern custom, chemise-lined black Morocco box (41.5 x 29 cm.). A complete set of Albert Besnard's striking suite of 26 etchings on the theme of death, printed on vellum and signed by the artist. This is one of only four copies printed on vellum. The other five sets (the edition was limited to nine impressions) were printed on paper (vélin d'Arches.) At least one of the other vellum copies has been dispersed (a single print on vellum is held, as part of a set (of the second, 1921 issue) on paper, at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.) Coppier (1920) and Delteil (1926) tell us that Besnard used the technique known as "retroussage" (using a piece of soft, fine… Read More

Description:
Louvain: by Martin van Overbeke, 1728. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary calf (upper joint and corners mended). The text is in in excellent condition. First edition of this Irish grammar, printed in English and Irish at the Irish Franciscan College in Louvain, by the Irish poet and antiquary Hugh MacCurtin (Aodh 'Buí' Mac Cruitín). MacCurtin tells us that he came to publish this work after forty years of studying the Irish language and finding all available grammars and instructional texts wanting. However, the text is largely taken from an unpublished "Grammatica Anglo-Hibernica, or a brief introduction to the Irish language"(ca. 1713) by the Gaelic scribe and lexicographer Francis Walsh (Proinsias Bhailís)(1654-1724). MacCurtin omitted "certain passages with which he possibly disagreed, such as Walsh's suggestion that the Latin character was more suitable than the Irish character for printing purposes as it was less expensive and common to all nations."(Ní Mhunghaile,… Read More
