Description:
The Hague,: Koninklijke Steendruckerij., 1867. Original chromolithograph, 31 x 44 cm approx. A very good example. Framed and glazed. Raden Saleh was born near Semarang in 1811. His uncle, the Regent, encouraged his early interest in drawing which was later stimulated by the Belgian artist A.A.J. Payen. He was taken to the Netherlands at the age of eighteen where he took drawing and painting lessons from Cornelius Kruseman, and later worked under one of the best landscape artists of the day, Andreas Schelfhout. He spent more than twenty years in Europe meeting many artists and notables before returning to Batavia in 1851. In 1847 he travelled to Algeria with Horace Vernet, the celebrated orientalist painter. The engraver, Carl Wilhelm Mieling, was born in Germany in 1815, and first worked as a lithographer and publisher in Rotterdam before moving to The Hague. Brussels: Société Belge du Libraire., 1837. First edition in French, pp.xv, 239. An attractive copy bound in contemporary red quarter morocco, spine a little rubbed. The first French translation of the author's "Skizzen von der Insel Java", a general sketch of Java on the geography, history, customs, and governance of the island, and describing the customs and attitudes of Europeans living on the island, but without the superb plates of the original edition. Includes a vocabulary of the Malay language. Josef Jakob Xaver Pfyffer zu Neueck (1798-1853) was a Swiss civil servant, politician and author. His sketches of the island of Java and its various inhabitants from 1829 was considered one of the most important works of the time on the cultural history of Java due to their precise observation and clear representation of the country.

Jena: Verlag von Gustav Fischer, 1911-12. First edition, three (of four) volumes, pp.xxiv, 413, 742, viii, 498, 20 plates, one in colour, 139 text illustrations, 4 folding maps. Text in German. A very good set in contemporary cloth, spines gilt, all edges speckled red. Light rubbing to extremities, neatly cancelled library bookplates on half-titles. Sijfert Hendrik Koorders (1863-1919) was a pre-eminent Dutch botanist who specialised on the flora of Java, and was authority for at least 648 taxa (a group of one or more populations of organisms). At the age of twenty-two he joined the Dutch East Indies Forest Service in Java, and by 1892 was curator at the Herbarium Bogoriense in Bogor, Java, where he was personally responsible for the acquisition of 40,000 specimens. In 1912 he founded the Dutch East Indies Association for Nature Protection. The separate volume of illustrations, published twenty-five years later in 1937, is not present here.
