Description:
The Ward Ritchie Press, Los Angeles, 1973; First Edition, 2nd printing; octavo, 160 pages; brown boards; gilt titles. Authoritative history of Los Angeles by fifty year resident John D. Weaver, whose knowledge of the City led to his selection to write of the entry on Los Angeles for the 1974 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, and the 1980 Capra Press book "Los Angeles: The Enormous Village." A prolific writer, Weaver was author of two novels and eight non-fiction books. Digby Diehl, book editor of the Los Angeles Times from 1969 to 1978, said of Weaver, "He was the first person to really give a true historical sensibility to everyday Angelenos. Until his book came out, there was really nothing that made the history of Los Angeles comprehensible to the guy on the street." Very Good Plus, in a clean and bright Very Good dust jacket with the flaps shallowly clipped. Signed on the f.f.e.p. by the author.

, . 8" x 10" glossy silver gelatin photograph of dancer/actress Eleanor Powell, whose pyrotechnic footwork earned her the moniker "Queen Of Tap." As a child Powell was forced by her mother to enroll in dance classes as a means of overcoming her shyness, and much to her own surprise excelled to such an extent that by age twelve she was opening dinner shows in Atlantic City and performing at private social events, where she met Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, who became her mentor. Between 1935 and 1945 Powell famously partnered with Fred Astaire, Buddy Ebsen, and George Murphy in such movies as Born To Dance, Rosalie, Broadway Melody of 1936, Honolulu, Broadway Melody of 1938, and Broadway Melody of 1940, which featured the legendary dance routine Begin The Beguine, widely considered the greatest tap number in film history. When once asked about Powell, Fred Astaire commented, "She put ‘em down like a man, no ricky-ticky sissy stuff with Ellie. She really knocked out a…

Samuel Harding, London, 1737; Hand colored folio copper engraving of Granata punica mala, plate #97 from A Curious Herbal by Elizabeth Blackwell, legendary wife of star-crossed botanist Alexander Blackwell, who undertook the production of a medicinal herbal in order to raise money to free her husband from debtor’s prison. Elizabeth rented rooms at London’s Chelsea Physic Garden, painted watercolors of the plants growing there, and took them to Fleet prison where Alexander added the taxonomic and foreign names plus short descriptions and notations on medicinal uses for each plant. She then single-handedly engraved the copper plates and colored the prints. While her efforts on behalf of her husband were successful in the short run, in 1747 Alexander Blackwell was executed in Sweden for his involvement in efforts to overthrow the Swedish crown. Lucien Vogel, Paris, 1914; First Edition; octavo (7 1/2" x 9 3/4"); 4 pages; Illustrated. An elegy to the fashion cape, authored by Francis de Miomandre for Lucien Vogel’s trend-setting Parisian fashion journal, La Gazette Du Bon Ton. Recognized world wide as the epitome of good taste and style, the Gazette was issued monthly between November 1912 and December 1925, minus a hiatus during The First World War. It employed the foremost designers, artists, writers, and critics of its age, and each of the magazine’s illustrated articles was impeccably designed and finely printed in individual single-fold folios on heavy handmade paper, then loosely laid into an outer printed folder. All artwork was produced using the costly pochoir, or stencil, technique of hand coloring. Fine condition, with beautiful in-text color Art Deco pochoir fashion illustrations by Paul Meras featuring seven different haute-couture ladies’ cape designs. From the 1914 Gazette. Not a reproduction. Text in French.
