London: Chapman and Hall, 1887. Margaret Stokes (1832-1900) was an Irish antiquarian and illustrator; her drawings of ancient monuments are exemplary and won widespread praise. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition, with 106 woodcuts, "Published by the Committee of Council on Education" that has been bound as an "Art Handbook" for the South Kensington Museum. (A supplemental title page has been added to the front endpapers, with the date of 1888.) Green cloth binding, ruled, with cover titles in black and gilt, gilt on the spine. Clean text; 210 pages. Indexed, fold-out chronological map; ten pages of adverts in the rear, as well as two pages in the front. A heroic figure during the Easter Uprising and later the long-serving President of Ireland, De Valera was both revered and hated by his political opponents. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Green cloth binding with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; xii, 236 pages; six photo illustrations within. Light bit of rub to tips. Label on the FFEP is from the Irish Industries Depot. Contemporary (1923) signature on the Title Page; label in Irish on the front paste-down, along with a differing previous-owner signature. Laid-in to pages 36-37 is a newspaper clipping with several letters to the editor regarding Ireland and a cartoon about FDR's fourth term as President; there is offset to those pages, as well as to pages 210-211 (no offending clipping still present). Preston: Akros Publications, 1968. MacDiarmid (the pseudonym of Christopher Morray Grieve, 1892-1978), an important modernist poet, a Scottish nationalist, and a communist who also flirted a bit with fascism. Quercus posits him as a good poet and an interesting eccentric of the Celtic persuasion. Here is a lovely little softcover booklet, lime green paper covers; LIMITED to 350 copies. In addition to the poetry, there is an appreciation by MacDiarmid. Edited, with an Introduction, by J.K. Annand. Clean text; 28 pages. The dustwrapper is also paper, and is integral to the covers, which are sewn. It has a portrait of the poet on its cover, and shows a bit of sun fade. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Limited.. Churchtown, Dundrum: Cuala Press, 1923. A fragment of the autobiography that Yeats persuaded his father to begin before his death. Printed at Yeats' private press by Elizabeth C. Yeats "in the Second Year of the Irish Free State," in an edition LIMITED to five hundred copies. 99 pages, with some unopened. Cuala's typical blue-gray boards with a linen spine. This copy is in Very Good Minus condition, showing some wear at the margins and spine. The paper label has had some loss but is still readable; there is a chip affecting the lower 1-1/4" of the spine. Paper is bright and clear but is somewhat stiff at this point. London: Henry G. Bohn, 1848. One of the famous travel-cum-scholarship books of the 19th Century. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First Edition, part of "Bohn's Antiquarian Library." Green cloth binding with blindstamped decorations. Gilt lettering on the spine (including the original price of 5 shillings at the foot). Clean text; 517 pages. This is an ex-library copy, but with minimal treatments: evidence of a card pocket on the rear paste-down; pasted label of the "Zion Research Library" on the front, dated 1933, covers an earlier private bookplate. There are four pages of publisher's adverts in the front, which is missing the first endpaper. The spine has turned to a brown color and has some chipping. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1868. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition, the Author's Edition "from the Third London Edition." One volume in a green cloth binding, beveled, with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. Covering March to August in Morris's epic poem. Clean text; 430 pages, with 14 pages of publisher's adverts in the rear, one of which announces that the second volume is "in preparation." Top edge is gilt. Mildly bumped and cocked a bit. Typical rubbing to head and foot of spine. Scattered bubbling (not severe). Evidence of moisture to the top of the binding, resulting in some faint flood marking within. While this is a sound copy, it is not the most beautiful, and perhaps not a wise choice for the advanced collector. . First American Edition.. Hard Cover. This is a Fine copy of the First Edition [Stated "First Edition'].. Initially written in Yiddish in 1937, the translation is by Maurice Samuel. London: John Lane The Bodley Head Ltd. , 1932. The third novel by the Anglo-Irish novelist (1887-1985) whose second ("Boy," 1931) had been withdrawn by its publisher, charged as "obscene." Hanley was regarded highly as a writer, but never managed huge popular success. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Red cloth bindingwith gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 275 pages, with four pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Initials of a previous-owner on the FFEP; some slight tanning of the page-ends; spine lightly faded with a bump at the crown. A solid copy, nonetheless. The dustwrapper, in a stunning design by Alan Odle, is unclipped. It shows some edgewear, with a few chips, and there are two cello-tape repairs across the spine. London: John Lane The Bodley Head Limited, 1927. This "wisdom book" of ethical teachings dates to the Second Century BCE. It is accepted by Roman Catholicism and the Eastern Orthodox as canonical scripture; for others, it is part of the Apocrypha ("The text of this Volume is the Revised Version of the Apocrypha"). This is an attractive production, with sixteen colour illustrations by Violet Brunton (1878-1951). The Introduction is by the journalist and art historian C. Lewis Hind (1862-1927). Large octavo, bound in black cloth with gilt decorations and titling. Clean text; xv, 2-page list of the illustrations, then 165 pages. Top-edge is gilt; others rough-cut. Dublin: Maunsel & Co., Limited, 1907. "Pat" is the pseudonym of Patrick Dermott Kenny (1862-1944) who could be described as a bit of a gadfly, with many interests and opinions; generally he was considered a Unionist and an anti-cleric. He also was present at the riot that greeted "The Playboy of the Western World" at the Abbey Theatre. This is a Good only copy of the Fifth Edition. An uncommon title. Tan paper wraps with titling on the front cover in black; rear cover is an advert for Pat's new book, "The Sorrows oif Ireland." Clean text; vii, 164 pages, with eight pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Quercus notes that 1907 was a banner year for Irish literature; the ads include works by Yeats and Synge. While both covers are present, they are disbound. Please note the condition issue. Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of repair or restoration. . Later Printing. Soft Cover. Softbound, in stapled white paper wraps; with titling in black on the front cover. Clean text; 32 pages, including a section "Books of Value on Ireland." in the rear. Introduction by Francis Hackett. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico, 1986. "A True Story" of a Cherokee youth by Forest Carter (pseudonym for Asa Earl Carter, d. 1979), that is now regarded as a fabrication. Foreword by Rennard Strickland. Cover illustration by Katherine Potter. Once an incredibly popular book, controversy errupted in the early 1990's with charges that Carter had once been a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and perhaps was not Native American at all. This is a Fine copy of the First Softbound Edition Thus. This copy is in unread, As New condition and is still in the shrinkwrap shipping plastic. Whatever the truth of the matter, Carter was a talented writer who was also responsible for the character Josey Wales, made into an iconic Clint Eastwood movie.
