This bright and attractive poster issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service bears "DISPLACED in America!" at top in large dramatic white lettering against a dark foreboding sky and "FOREST FIRE DISASTERS can be prevented...." at bottom in black letters against white backdrop. Large central image depicts a fire-ravaged wooded landscape in background with a burnt-out farmstead in the middle ground and in the foreground a mother and child viewing the decimation while a weathered old man holding a sack of possessions over his shoulder gazes from left at the viewer. Best of all, this superb example has been signed in pencil at lower left on verso by its artist, ELMO WHITE, a prolific American artist who designed everything from postage stamps to World War Two patriotic posters such as "Know Your Merchant Fleet" and "Invent for Victory." Moderately age toned and darkened throughout, with numerous small edge tears and some original folds weak; binding traces. Despite fair only condition, this example is handleable and easily readable -- and "The Daily Chicago Times" is seen far less often than Chicago's more popular "Press and Tribune." A good atmosphere piece, with much political coverage, numerous boilerplate advertisements, etc.

Hartford: Brown and Gross, 1859. Hardcover. 8vo. Original blind-embossed red cloth, gilt. x, 402pp. Very good. Mild edgewear and bit of rubbing/light soiling to binding; light even age toning throughout. Overall a tight, clean, nice third edition of this verse collection (with front board and spine gilt bright) in which Sigourney takes a Biblical line and uses it as the inspiration for a poem -- one for every day of the year, January 1st through December 31st. This particular copy was likely a prize for a school contest, for an inner flyleaf has been inscribed and signed large and bold in brown ink by the author (though recipient's name has been filled in by another hand): "Presented to / Andrew Sherratt / for excellence in Reading / with the good wishes of his friend, / L.H. Sigourney." Richmond: Daily Dispatch, 1865. Paperback. Folio. Self-cover. 4pp. Good only. Age toned and somewhat soiled, with a couple of centerfold edge tears. Overall quite respectable looking, though, with no edge chips. Decent full issue of this Confederate newspaper from the capital, dated several months prior to the Confederate government's evacuation in early April and the subsequent burning and occupation by Union troops. Typical late war news. Some wear issues, but easily legible and quite "handleable" -- very uncommon in any condition. Southern newspapers were generally printed on inferior quality paper, hence usually exhibit more age toning than their Northern counterparts.

Springfield: Daily Illinois State Register, May 8, 1865 (Vol. 17, No. 104). Large folio. (4pp). Good plus. Mild age toning and sporatic foxing. Overall an attractive, very displayable copy largely free of edge tears. Extensive coverage of the trial of Lincoln's assassins, rumors about Jefferson Davis's possible implication, General Joseph Johnston's farewell order, other Civil War "wrap up" matters, etc. Numerous interesting boilerplate advertisements.

Two discreet staple holes (that's right: staple holes) pierce near top of front board, leaving scrape on front flyleaf; jacket faintly edgeworn, mainly at head and tail of spine. A tight and attractive first edition of this scholarly study, volume 16 in this publisher's "Daily Life" series. Front flyleaf bears the nifty circular blind-embossed ownership imprint of noted television character actor Robert Casper (1924-2020).
