Very Good. 1959. Manuscript. AUDOUIN DOLLFUS - French Physicist/Astronomer/Discoverer. In 1950, it was thought the planet Mercury, because of its small size, had probably lost its atmosphere through the escape of the molecules into space. Dollfus announced that he had detected a very faint atmosphere from polarization measurements carried out at the Pic-du-Midi Observatory in the French Pyrenees. He also investigated the possibility of an atmosphere around the Moon. The rate of thermal dissipation into space of all but the heavier gases (which are cosmically very scarce) from the Moon is so high that an atmosphere cannot be expected.In 1966 Dollfus discovered JANUS, the innermost moon of Saturn, at a time when the rings to which it is very close were seen edge on from Earth (and practically invisible). On offer is a fine diary written by a woman in the southern U.S. at the height of the Great Depression. Kept by Mary McIlwaine, it depicts life in a southern U.S. city during the Depression through the eyes of a middle-aged, middle class woman coping with economic challenges and an ailing mother.The author of the diary is Mary Plummer McIlwaine. McIlwaine was born in 1889, the daughter of a prominent medical doctor in Petersburg, VA. She apparently never married. She passed away in 1973 at the age of 84. She keeps this diary for the year 1932 when she was 42/43. Mary lived with her widowed mother and her sister 'Becca' in Petersburg, VA. She does not work at a job but context shows that she owned (either herself or with family members) several houses that were rented out. Her diary recounts the day-to-day activities in her life as well as those around her. While unable to translate research suggests this is a biography of Anders Carl Rutstrom who was a renowned professor of Theology, priest, author and activist. His work promoting Herrnhutismen also known as the Moravian Church saw Rutstrom banished from the Swedish realm. One online source provides: "This is a comprehensive story about the priest Anders Carl Rutström who was a member of the Hat Party. He became the subject of so many unfair and unreasonable persecutions that it reminds you of an inquisition. This work is an account of this remarkable campaign against Rutström, a campaign that did not end until after his death. Rutström’s Defense is also included. The author of the diary of Anna Sophia Musser. She was born in Lancaster County, PA, likely in the village of Robertstown. At some point she married a man named Ashton and moved to Middlesex County, MA, where she passed away in 1953. Informal research has not turned up any additional biographical information about Musser. The diary opens on a sad note: "The family was around all day and a very sad New Years for us as our sister was lying dead and we couldn't realize it was New Years. Friends and neighbours called and kept us company" [Jan 1]. This references the deat of Anna's 13-year-old sister, Mabel, who died of typhoid fever.
