In Edo-period Japan, bansho (small buildings or huts for security and surveillance guards) were placed in central locations. There were several types of bansho, and the present document was printed as an instructional legal guide for security men in tsuji-bansho (neighborhood guard stations), located in the streets of samurai residences, especially in Edo. The guards needed to know what to do and how to proceed in the unusual situations they might confront: deserted children (a child under three is "deserted" but an older child is "lost"), drunks and vagrants, corpses (murders or suicides), violent behavior, illegal disposals and dumpings, altercations and fights in front of the samurai mansions, fugitives, violence and injuries within the samurai residences, violent attacks using swords, jurisdictional questions (if a body is found on the border between two tsuji-bansho, the location of a foot of the body -… Read More

A very rare edition printed with moveable types, apparently unrecorded in the standard bibliographies, of the story - or legend - of the creation of the first statue of Siddhartha Gautama or Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The statue, executed while Buddha was still alive, was commissioned by King Udayana of Kaushambi, a contemporary of Buddha. It was the very first image of Buddha, and is especially important as it was carved from life. Copies of this statue made their way to China with the spread of Buddhism and, later, as we shall see, to Japan. The text provides a history of the creation of the first statue of Buddha, which is perhaps the most famous of all Buddha images. Early - possibly the first - printed edition of a work on the state rites of the Jurchen Jin dynasty, probably written in the late 12th century. The Jurchens ruled northern China under the name of Jin from 1115 to 1234. They were a people from present-day northeast China who spoke a Tungusic language related to Manchu. The Jurchen had their own institutions but also adopted many aspects of Chinese rulership. This book outlines ceremonies and events at the Jurchen Jin court. The book is of unknown authorship and date. Qing scholar Weng Fanggang 翁方綱 (1733-1818) wrote that "the book contains mentions of events dated Dading 7 [1167], 11 [1171], 19 [1179], and 27 [1187]...the book was [thus] probably completed toward the end of the Dading reign period [i.e., before 1190]" (Weng, Weng Fanggang zuan Siku tiyao gao, 409). First edition of this study of a phonological text by 18th-century thinker Dai Zhen 戴震 (1724-77, style name Dongyuan 東原). "Dai Zhen began life as a nobody. But he nevertheless managed to seize the attention of Beijing's cognoscenti in 1755, and for over a decade he was the intellectual toast of the Lower Yangzi Delta" (Hu, China's Transition to Modernity). Dai Zhen died young, and several of his writings were posthumously published, including a phonological work called "Shenglei biao" 聲類表 ["Charts on the Categories of Sounds"]. Separately, the posthumous collection included a text called "Zhuanyu ershi zhang xu" 轉語二十章序 ["Preface to 20 paragraphs on turned words"]. Yet the text to which this Preface belonged was gone. First edition of this lithographed collectanea with historical and philological studies. The collection contains studies by the brothers Luo Fuchang 羅福萇 (1895-1921) and Luo Fuyi (1905-81), who edited it. The brothers were the sons of Luo Zhenyu 羅振玉 (1866-1940), one of the most prominent intellectuals of the period, who published several books with at least one of the imprints used in our book. All but two studies in the collection concern the Tanguts (Western Xia) and Khitan (Liao), two states contemporaneous with the Chinese Song empire in the 10th to 13th centuries. This is a rare example of an Eizan-ban, a book printed with moveable type at the temples on Mount Hiei, outside of Kyoto, where Enryakuji Temple, one of the most important monasteries of Japan and the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism, is located. First edition of one of the earliest Japanese books on the daikon radish, with instructions on 20 ways to cut the vegetable and 30 ways to cook it. Little is known about Kidodō, but he may have learned his trade under the Shijo School and worked as a professional restaurant chef in Kyoto. This book is rare, with no copy in WorldCat. In Kidodō's Preface, he writes that the daikon, of which there were many varieties (described here), was inexpensive and readily available to all social classes for enjoyment. In the final years of the Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Chinese Buddhism experienced a revival. The bibliophilic founder of the Shanghai Medical Press, Fubao Ding (1874-1952), was active in this movement, publishing his "groundbreaking" (Scott) Ding's Buddhist Studies Collectanea [Dingshi Foxue congshu] from 1918 to 1923, numbering about 30 titles. Many of the texts were based on Ding's own large collection of rare books (about 150,000 volumes), reprinting ancient Buddhist texts with his own annotations, punctuation, and explanations. He focused on the lexicography of the Buddhist scriptures in order to help readers comprehend Buddhist teachings through reliance on the texts alone. Schraenen was responsible for a long series of exhibitions devoted to artists' publications at the Neues Museum Weserburg. The catalogue is illustrated with pictures of many of Buren's bookworks. One of the dialogues that has been attributed to him is the Pinax or Tabula, also known as the Tablet of Cebes.
