Description:
One sheet of paper (318 x 465 mm.), woodblock printed on both sides. [Japan]: ca. 1764-85. In Edo-period Japan, bansho (small buildings or huts for security and surveillance guards) were placed in central locations. There were several types of bansho, and the present document was printed as an instructional legal guide for security men in tsuji-bansho (neighborhood guard stations), located in the streets of samurai residences, especially in Edo. The guards needed to know what to do and how to proceed in the unusual situations they might confront: deserted children (a child under three is "deserted" but an older child is "lost"), drunks and vagrants, corpses (murders or suicides), violent behavior, illegal disposals and dumpings, altercations and fights in front of the samurai mansions, fugitives, violence and injuries within the samurai residences, violent attacks using swords, jurisdictional questions (if a body is found on the border between two tsuji-bansho, the location of a foot of the body -… Read More

Description:
14; 13 folding leaves. Two parts in one vol. Large 8vo, cont. or later dark wrappers dyed with persimmon juice (shibubiki), new stitching. [Japan, probably Kyoto: printed with moveable types, ca. 1615-40]. A very rare edition printed with moveable types, apparently unrecorded in the standard bibliographies, of the story - or legend - of the creation of the first statue of Siddhartha Gautama or Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The statue, executed while Buddha was still alive, was commissioned by King Udayana of Kaushambi, a contemporary of Buddha. It was the very first image of Buddha, and is especially important as it was carved from life. Copies of this statue made their way to China with the spread of Buddhism and, later, as we shall see, to Japan. The text provides a history of the creation of the first statue of Buddha, which is perhaps the most famous of all Buddha images. King Udayana commissioned the statue "so that he could gaze upon the sacred form of the Buddha while the latter… Read More

Description:
96; 94; 101; 84 folding leaves. Four vols. Large 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [Guangzhou]: Guangya shuju 廣雅書局, 1895. Early - possibly the first - printed edition of a work on the state rites of the Jurchen Jin dynasty, probably written in the late 12th century. The Jurchens ruled northern China under the name of Jin from 1115 to 1234. They were a people from present-day northeast China who spoke a Tungusic language related to Manchu. The Jurchen had their own institutions but also adopted many aspects of Chinese rulership. This book outlines ceremonies and events at the Jurchen Jin court. The book is of unknown authorship and date. Qing scholar Weng Fanggang 翁方綱 (1733-1818) wrote that "the book contains mentions of events dated Dading 7 [1167], 11 [1171], 19 [1179], and 27 [1187]...the book was [thus] probably completed toward the end of the Dading reign period [i.e., before 1190]" (Weng, Weng Fanggang zuan Siku tiyao gao, 409). One theory holds that the book is in fact… Read More

Description:
Two vols. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers, orig. stitching. [China]: Haishi bianyi ju 海事編譯局, 1929. First edition of this study of a phonological text by 18th-century thinker Dai Zhen 戴震 (1724-77, style name Dongyuan 東原). "Dai Zhen began life as a nobody. But he nevertheless managed to seize the attention of Beijing's cognoscenti in 1755, and for over a decade he was the intellectual toast of the Lower Yangzi Delta" (Hu, China's Transition to Modernity). Dai Zhen died young, and several of his writings were posthumously published, including a phonological work called "Shenglei biao" 聲類表 ["Charts on the Categories of Sounds"]. Separately, the posthumous collection included a text called "Zhuanyu ershi zhang xu" 轉語二十章序 ["Preface to 20 paragraphs on turned words"]. Yet the text to which this Preface belonged was gone. It has not surfaced since, and it is unclear if it was ever written. Zeng Guangyuan, as told by his friend Zhou Zhaoyuan 周兆沅 in a Preface to our… Read More

Six lithographed illus. Eight vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. title slips, orig. stitching. [China]: Qijing kan 七經堪 & Molü tang 墨綠堂, 1933-37. First edition of this lithographed collectanea with historical and philological studies. The collection contains studies by the brothers Luo Fuchang 羅福萇 (1895-1921) and Luo Fuyi (1905-81), who edited it. The brothers were the sons of Luo Zhenyu 羅振玉 (1866-1940), one of the most prominent intellectuals of the period, who published several books with at least one of the imprints used in our book. All but two studies in the collection concern the Tanguts (Western Xia) and Khitan (Liao), two states contemporaneous with the Chinese Song empire in the 10th to 13th centuries. Luo Fuchang, who died young, had turned to the study of the Tangut script after studying several European languages. His work Xi Xia guoshu lüeshuo 西夏國書略說 [Cursory Discussion of the National Script of the Western Xia], written in 1921, is the… Read More

Eight columns per page, 17 characters per column. Three sizes of type. 42; 41; 38; 40 folding leaves. Four vols. Large 8vo (280 x 195 mm.), orig. dark wrappers dyed with persimmon juice (shibubiki), new stitching. [Enryakuji Temple, Mount Hiei: mid-Kan'ei, ca. 1626-30]. An unrecorded moveable type edition of the commentary and subcommentary of Zongmi (780-841), on the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment. This is a rare example of an Eizan-ban, a book printed with moveable type at the temples on Mount Hiei, outside of Kyoto, where Enryakuji Temple, one of the most important monasteries of Japan and the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism, is located. Printing began there in the 13th century. "There were few of these [printed books] in the medieval period, perhaps due to the dominance of Kyoto itself as a printing centre...Eizan printing came into its own on a large scale only from the end of the sixteenth century, with the introduction of movable-type printing. Illus. in the text. 29.5 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. blue semi-stiff wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper cover (label flaked), new stitching. Kyoto: Nishimura Ichi'uemon et al., Edo, Osaka, & Ishū: colophon dated 1785. First edition of one of the earliest Japanese books on the daikon radish, with instructions on 20 ways to cut the vegetable and 30 ways to cook it. Little is known about Kidodō, but he may have learned his trade under the Shijo School and worked as a professional restaurant chef in Kyoto. This book is rare, with no copy in WorldCat. In Kidodō's Preface, he writes that the daikon, of which there were many varieties (described here), was inexpensive and readily available to all social classes for enjoyment. Its uses in the kitchen were limitless: when raw and fresh, it could be employed in certain ways to enjoy its crisp texture, and when cooked, it produced entirely different results and pleasures. Its possibilities ranged from being used in highly sophisticated… Read More

[Japan]: colophon in Vol. II dated 1669. "It was not until the seventeenth century that the first Japanese version of the Chinese Buddhist canon was printed, and it was rapidly followed by a second. Thanks to the late date, the circumstances of their production and their subsequent fates are better known than for many of the earlier continental editions. The first version was printed using movable type in 1637-48 by Tenkai (1586-1643), a monk who was in the entourage of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. This was done on the orders of Ieyasu's grandson, Iemitsu, so it was a state project...The second version was printed with woodblocks in 1668-78 by Tetsugen Doko (1630-1682), a prominent Zen monk of the newly arrived Obaku school of Zen, who travelled throughout Japan to collect the… Read More

Description:
Four vols. 8vo, orig. printed title labels on upper covers, orig. stitching. Shanghai: Yi xue shu ju [Shanghai Medical Press], 1923. In the final years of the Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Chinese Buddhism experienced a revival. The bibliophilic founder of the Shanghai Medical Press, Fubao Ding (1874-1952), was active in this movement, publishing his "groundbreaking" (Scott) Ding's Buddhist Studies Collectanea [Dingshi Foxue congshu] from 1918 to 1923, numbering about 30 titles. Many of the texts were based on Ding's own large collection of rare books (about 150,000 volumes), reprinting ancient Buddhist texts with his own annotations, punctuation, and explanations. He focused on the lexicography of the Buddhist scriptures in order to help readers comprehend Buddhist teachings through reliance on the texts alone. Ding reprinted the [Daming] Sanfang fashu, a collection of definitions for numbered terms, such as the three realms. The collection, beginning with terms related… Read More

30 pp., mimeographed & rubber-stamped, french-fold. Small 4to (215 x 157 mm.), found sheet music wrappers, title and author's name stamped on upper wrapper, orig. black cloth tape on spine, staple-bound. Amsterdam: In-Out Productions, 1973. One of Carrión's earliest bookworks, produced in an edition of 100 numbered copies - it is numbered in manuscript on the flap of the upper wrapper (ours no. 30). This work fuses the Mexican artist's lifelong interest in language and his budding association with mail and stamp art. He has appropriated dance instructions from a manual and reconstituted them as the principal text, reformulated into the format of poems. In the upper corner of each page, Carrión has stamped - in green ink - the name of the dance form dissected in the text. The sheet music wrappers are unique for each copy. In November 1972, Carrión co-founded In-Out Center with a group of nine expatriate artists residing in the Netherlands; it was the first independent artist-run space in… Read More

Kendrick (1789-1872), was the son of one of the pioneer nurserymen in America, who had established a nursery in 1790 between Newton and Brighton, Massachusetts. "By 1823, William had become associated with his father in the enterprise, and for a half a century he was one of a small group of nurserymen who laid the foundations of the fruit industry of the present day...His interests were not entirely centered in nursery and fruit enterprises. Engraved vignette on title & one large folding engraved plate (a little frayed at inner margin). xxxx, 78 pp. 8vo, cont. half-sheep & speckled boards (two corners a little worn, a little worming to covers), spine gilt. Moscow: "bey der Typographischen Gesellschafft," 1785. First edition of this translation, printed in Moscow, and edited anonymously. Cebes of Thebes (ca. 430-350 B.C.E.) was a member of Socrates' inner circle. One of the speakers in the Phaedo of Plato, he was represented as an earnest seeker after virtue and truth, keen in argument and cautious in decision. One of the dialogues that has been attributed to him is the Pinax or Tabula, also known as the Tablet of Cebes. In fact, it was probably Hellenistic, from the second or at the earliest, the first century. The Tabula was well known in antiquity, and after the first modern publication in the late fifteenth century, popular in Europe through the eighteenth century.
