Interior contains mild scattered foxing / staining. A 35 mm. tear and a couple of tiny holes are present at the bottom of two leaves (pp. 13-16). The tears are carefully sealed but with some soiling, discoloration and a few letters obstructed. …An influential political tract first printed (anonymously) in 1787 by the renowned Swiss historian Johannes von Müller (1752-1809). This is the second "improved" edition.

William Owtram (1625-1679) was an English conformist theologian known for his great skill in rabbinical learning. Title page contains the Plantin device. Bound in a fine unsigned modern full calf binding with blind stamped and gilt boards and an extra-gilt spine. Interior pages are clean and fresh with an occasional spot. Edges are trimmed a bit closely on some leaves. A very attractive copy. The engravings, which mostly depict different forms of crucifixion, are ascribed to the Dutch engraver Peter van der Borcht. Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was a Belgian antiquarian who specialized in the study of ancient and classical history. His work "De cruce libri tres" (first printed in 1583) is an important scholarly study on crucifixion in antiquity. [Bibliographie Lipsienne I, pp. 189-190; Adams L-778].

The binding and the dust jacket show minor wear to the extremities. A small tear (1 cm) is present on the upper edge of the rear jacket. The bottom corner edge of the rear board contains a (12 x 3 mm) chip in the cloth. Pages are clean and unmarked. This work appeared in at least two different versions (both with the copyright 1956). One version, (offered here) is titled "Dictionary of Magic." The other version, titled "Dictionary of the Occult," is printed in smaller dimensions, on lower quality paper, and it does not contain a preface and a bibliography. Not apparent which printing came first. Harry E. Wedeck (1894-1996), was a Latin teacher, also fluent in French, who published several popular dictionaries on occult and other subjects.

The inside margin of the frontispiece is carefully restored with some spots of loss to the inner black border-line of the illustration. End papers are stained; notations in an early hand are scrawled on the front free end paper. Interior pages contain light age toning, scattered marginal foxing, soiling and wear.
