Spine with gilt bands and red label with gilt title. Speckled edges. = Single herpetological contribution - and one of his rarest works - by the German physician and naturalist Christoph Gottwaldt (1633-1700), also famous for his Wunderkammer book, Musei Gottwaldiani Testaceorum Stellarum Marinarum et Coralliorum... (1782). Both works were published long after his death, but his illustrations were in accuracy far ahead of his time (see Adler). His collection of natural curiosities was purchased - also long after his death - by Czar Peter the Great of Russia. The illustrations, of turtles and tortoises, are truly excellent. Original orange wrappers. = An apparently very rare work on the anatomy and ontogeny of an Australian fish. This is a complete part, published in two issues of the society's Denkschriften, vol. 4(51), published as part of Semon's zoologische Forschungsreise. The plate was published separately, and was issued with the unrelated plate 43 (here included). Also included: Gregory, E. H. Die Entwickelung der Kopfhöhlen und des Mesoderms bei Ceratodes forsteri (title page, 18 pp. [numbered 643-660], 23 text figures). Both parts uncut. Berlin, August Hirschwald, 1840. 4to. viii, 261 pp.; five engraved plates. Contemporary pebbled half calf over pebbled boards. Gilt title on the spine. Brown endpapers. Marbled edges. = A rare, early work on embryology by the German anatomist and embryologist Karl Bogislaus Reichert (1811-1883). DSB: "Reichert made a very important contribution to the knowledge of transformations of early structure during the embryo's development and the understanding from a comparative point of view of the development of an individual organism." The plates do depict the microscopical development of embryo's of frogs and chickens. Former owner's inscription, dated 1864, on the front free endpaper recto. Boards rubbed at edges, spine partly chipped; some light foxing througout, damp staining to upper gutter and top margin, progressively stronger on the last few plates. Red edges. = First and perhaps only edition of rare work by the German polymath Jacob Christian Schaeffer (1718-1790). It deals with mayflies (Ephemeroptera), here named "flying shore bait", most probably for being an important food-source of fresh-water fishes. The work was printed by the Gebrüdern Zunkel, not published by them. Paper slightly toned, remnants of a label in the title page margin, otherwise a very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 3638.
