Spine with gilt bands and red label with gilt title. Speckled edges. = Single herpetological contribution - and one of his rarest works - by the German physician and naturalist Christoph Gottwaldt (1633-1700), also famous for his Wunderkammer book, Musei Gottwaldiani Testaceorum Stellarum Marinarum et Coralliorum... (1782). Both works were published long after his death, but his illustrations were in accuracy far ahead of his time (see Adler). His collection of natural curiosities was purchased - also long after his death - by Czar Peter the Great of Russia. The illustrations, of turtles and tortoises, are truly excellent. Spine with five raised bands, blind-tooled floral patterns and vellum label with title. Speckled edges. = A very good copy of the rare first edition. The Swedish traveller and botanist Pehr Osbeck (1723-1805) describes in this book his voyage and many native plants he found in China and Southeast Asia. The preface is by Linnaeus. At the end there is an account of a voyage to China by the botanist, pupil of Linnaeus, and clergyman Olof Torén (1718-1753), originally in the form of letters to Linnaeus "En Ostindisk Resa til Suratte, China &c. Edges pale yellow. = An important work on cartography, geomorphology and trigonometry, with the chief objective of introducing a standard method of visualising optical relief in geographical and geological maps. The author is the German geologist Johann Georg[e] Lehmann (1776-1811). He is neither mentioned on the title page, nor in the preface, but he did sign the last two plates (with his middle name ending in an e). “From 1789 he attended the War School in Dresden. Publication of this work was followed by an exchange of letters and ideas between Darwin and Wiesner (see Darwin Correspondence Project online). Uncut. Inscribed on the front wrapper by J. P. MacMorland. Inserted: an invoice, dated 1 March 1929, by the Leipziger antiquarian K. F. Koehler, to the Dutch professor of Botany, C. E. B. Bremekamp (then working at the Transvaal University College, Pretoria), listing this copy and several others - including one work by Charles Darwin - from Koehler's catalogue 51. Small chip to spine foot, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Original orange wrappers. = An apparently very rare work on the anatomy and ontogeny of an Australian fish. This is a complete part, published in two issues of the society's Denkschriften, vol. 4(51), published as part of Semon's zoologische Forschungsreise. The plate was published separately, and was issued with the unrelated plate 43 (here included). Also included: Gregory, E. H. Die Entwickelung der Kopfhöhlen und des Mesoderms bei Ceratodes forsteri (title page, 18 pp. [numbered 643-660], 23 text figures). Both parts uncut. Binding of text part broken, with the first and last few gatherings detached. Otherwise very good, clean, unmarked copy.

Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. = A rarely- seen,well-illustrated and detailed study, in particular dealing with the surroundings of Alexandria and Rosetta. Published in the Anstalt's Mittheilungen, Band VIII, but this is the offprint, with double pagination. The author, Janos "Johann" Jankó (1868-1902) was a Hungarian ethnographer, historian and geographer. Spine abraded; front free endpaper a bit chipped; otherwise very good. Clean, unmarked.

Original printed cloth. = The best German photography of these years. Includes photos of animals, landscapes, portraits, nudes, etc., as well as X-ray photography and macro-photography. Inscribed by former owner on the front free endpaper (dated 1931). Tiny bump to top outer corners. A very good copy.

Berlin, August Hirschwald, 1840. 4to. viii, 261 pp.; five engraved plates. Contemporary pebbled half calf over pebbled boards. Gilt title on the spine. Brown endpapers. Marbled edges. = A rare, early work on embryology by the German anatomist and embryologist Karl Bogislaus Reichert (1811-1883). DSB: "Reichert made a very important contribution to the knowledge of transformations of early structure during the embryo's development and the understanding from a comparative point of view of the development of an individual organism." The plates do depict the microscopical development of embryo's of frogs and chickens. Former owner's inscription, dated 1864, on the front free endpaper recto. Boards rubbed at edges, spine partly chipped; some light foxing througout, damp staining to upper gutter and top margin, progressively stronger on the last few plates. Wien, Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1884. 8vo (24.5 x 15.7 cm). 45 pp.; five lithographed plates inclusing a map and profiles, and three with invertebrates, mostly molluscs). original printed wrappers. = An important and well-illustrated contribution to the Eocene marine fauna of Austria, written by the German palaeontologist and malacologist Karl Alphons Borromäs Josef Penecke (1858-1944). It includes the description of several new species. Offprint, with its own wrappers, from the academy's Sitzungsberichte. From the library of the Austrian geologist Alexander Tollmann (1928-2007). Some light spotting, otherwise very good.

Regensburg, privately published, 1757. 4to (23.0 x 18.8 cm). Printed title, 34 pp. Disbound. Red edges. = First and perhaps only edition of rare work by the German polymath Jacob Christian Schaeffer (1718-1790). It deals with mayflies (Ephemeroptera), here named "flying shore bait", most probably for being an important food-source of fresh-water fishes. The work was printed by the Gebrüdern Zunkel, not published by them. Paper slightly toned, remnants of a label in the title page margin, otherwise a very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 3638.

Tübingen, H. Laupp, 1851. 8vo (20.6 x 12.6 cm). viii, 578, [ii] pp. Contemporary half calf over grained boards. Spine with gilt lines and title. Marbled flyleaves. = Second, improved and expanded edition of this important standard work on the south German Jurassic deposits dividing it in eighteen zones, according to their petrographical development and palaeontological features, with the Lias and the brown and white Jura each resolved into six zones. Quenstedt was professor of mineralogy and geognosy at the University of Tübingen. Boards a bit rubbed, otherwise a very good clean copy. Zittel, History of Geology and Palaeontology, 505. Nürnberg und Leipzig, C. H. Zeh, 1825. 8vo (22.2 x 13.8 cm). xvi, 335 pp. Marbled wrappers. = Rare treatise by the German naturalist Jacob Ernst von Reider (1784-1853). Together with the German zoologist and arachnologist Carl Wilhelm Hahn (1786-1835), Reider also wrote the Fauna Boica, oder gemeinnützige Naturgeschichte der Thiere Bayerns, which included an ichthyological part as well. The present work contains a large chapter with fish recipes. Uncut. Wrappers frayed at edges, spine cover chipped at edges; internally clean, unmarked. A very good copy. Original uniform printed wrappers. = A seldom seen complete part of this important contribution to the phytoplankton (diatoms) from the Indian Ocean, with the descriptions and illustrations of many new and little known taxa. The fine lithographic plates are reminiscent of the work of Haeckel. This is part of a long series edited by C. Chun. Spine covers chipped at foot, otherwise very good, complete, and unmarked.

Floral endpapers. = This detailed encyclopaedia by the Austrian botanist, microbiologist and cultural philosopher Raoul Heinrich Francé (1874-1943) may be regarded as the botanical counterpart of Brehm's Tierwelt. The format and is quite similar, but Francé's work differs in having many fine chromolithographed plates with printed overlays. A detailed collation is as follows.
