In 1917 Hahn and Lise Meitner discovered the most stable isotope of element 91, which they named protactinium. The present paper, published eleven years later, discusses protactinium as a radioactive and as a chemical element. .

His treatise contains the classic description of general paralysis of the insane, along with an attempt to correlate the pathology of the disease with its clinical manifestations.
