Slight waterstaining and worm holes to the head of the gutters and worming to the lower right corner of last forty leaves. Tear to corner of leaf 3C4 with no loss of text, and a clean tear to leaf 3G4 covering the last ten lines of text but there is no loss of text. The text "Publish'd April 4th 1779 by R.E.Pine" in scratch letter on plate, within platemark below the image. Initials J.L.G.D handwritten in brown ink. Pencil inscription to lower margin: "The Death Mask of David Garrick with the eyes painted in". Platemark, 240x155mm. Sheet, 305x246mm. Some surface soiling, foxing and a small rubbed patch to the margin. The image itself is in excellent condition. Death mask prints are extremely rare and this is thought to be the only death mask portrait print in mezzotint. Volume I published by C&J Rivington, the other two volumes by John Murray. 8vo. 212x130mm. pp. Vol. I: xvii, [3], 498 (lacking half-title); Vol. II: [vi], 534, errata leaf; Vol. III: [x], [2], 541. Half calf, marbled paper covered boards. Maroon morocco label to spine, lettered in gilt. Some slight rubbing to edges and to small areas one the spines (particularly to the foot of volume II) but overall in very good condition. Internally fine. A very nice set. This first edition of volume I is rare, no copy being recorded at the BL. Warton was, in fact, William Wood, a High Anglican Priest from Fulham. Although the work is presented as advice for a parish priest on how to administer to the dying and support the bereaved, it is written in a such a direct and personal way that it can be read as a sort of novel.

Zurich Der Kreis 1954, 1954. Hardcover. One hundred photographs of the male figure from ten years of Der Kreis magazine. A very good copy in green linen boards. There is some watermarking on the front cover which has affected the fore-edges the pages inside (which are slightly stained and crinkled) but generally this is a very good copy. As the introduction says, "This book of photographs is not available in bookstores; it is intended as a private edition for our comrades all over the world". The photographs "were chosen simply from the point of view of youthful charm and manly beauty. Varied as the pictures may be, we believe that they harmonize to form a hymn in praise of the masculine body". This copy comes with a bookplate "Ex Libris Carl Van Vechten". Van Vechten was a music and dance critic, photograher and novelist. He was also an early admirer of Gertrude Stein and her literary executor. "This collection of [McCullin's] best work is a statement of man's inhumanity to man - and is a more poignant and more powerful statement than could be made in a hundred books of words or a hundred films. The plates are loose and housed in a portfolio (337x255mm), backed with brown linen, boards covered with dark brown paper lettered and illustrated with a minimalist, modernist design. Ribbon ties. Lacks plate one but otherwise complete. The contents are in excellent condition, near fine. The front board has some wear and there is a tear to the linen spine. A superb collection of modernist shop designs some of which are by Herbst himself. Introductory essay by Herbst. Born in Paris in 1891, René Herbst studied architecture in London and Frankfurt from 1908. In 1919 Herbst began work in Paris as a furniture designer and interior decorator. Dew and Mildew is Wren first work of fiction, a collection of linked but separate short stories (hence semi-detached) of the supernatural at the heart of which is a haunted bungalow by the alarming name of Sudden-Death Lodge.

Uncut in original pale brown paper paper wrappers, rebacked, title reprinted within wide decorative border on upper cover, imprint within same border on lower cover. Wrappers rather soiled and chipped, tears to upper cover at the joints, light browning and spotting. But overall a good copy considering that it is a fragile publication. Rare first edition of this historical survey of Salzburg charitable institutions and hospitals. Tettinek is described in the title as "Bürger un Magistrats-Secretär in Salzburg". Worldcat locates only three copies, at BNUS in Strasbourg, and at Harvard and Stanford.

[11], 84 engraved plates. 83 have three oblong rebus stories from the Bible and the final leaf title "Hieroglyphisches Beschluß Gedichte", [1]. With two exuberantly engraved title pages. The engraver is Hans Georg Bodenehr. Front pastedown has an inscription by an Anton Pruska (c1900) who was a sculptor and teacher. The first two leaves of part one have been coloured by hand. Text printed in red and black. Bound in half pigskin, paste paper covered boards. Edges coloured red. Covers rubbed and worn. Internally very good with some foxing and browning but overall a very good copy of Mattsperger's "Rebus" Bible intended to introduce children to Bible stories by telling them through pictures accompanied by short simple texts. Gauffered edges. Marbled endpapers. Verso of front free end paper has the book label of John Sparrow and a manuscript shelfmark and, in pencil (in Sparrow's hand) the inscription "The editio princeps from the Lamoignon Library". This was one of the great French libraries belonging to generations of the Lamoignon family of statesmen, lawyers and scholars with close connections to the French monarchy. Corners slightly worn, joints rubbed and hinges a little weak but overall a very good and internally excellent, a lovely crisp copy, beautifully printed.
