Description:
[Dayton, Ohio], 1910. Very good. Single mounted photograph, measuring about 9.5" x 7.5", tipped onto a mount adding a 1.25" border. Mount chipped and rounded, with the image mostly unaffected but for a small corner chip about the size of a large grain of rice; very good. Excellent portrait of a group of fourteen construction workers, along with a well-dressed businessman involved in the affair, plus some seemingly reated gentlemen in the background, including a bearded Amish gentleman. A building in the background, bearing an advertisement for Mose Cohen & Co. would place this image in downtown Dayton, Ohio, and based on the dress and style of the workers, sometime in the first ten to fifteen years of the 20th century, if not a bit earlier. A great photograph of construction in Dayton during a time of expansion and wealth - the city's population nearly doubled between 1900 and 1920.

Description:
Scranton, PA: Miller Casket Company, 1926. Very good. 22 black-and-white or sepia photographs, ranging in size from about 6" x 13" to 8" x 14". Each photograph bears detailed writing on the verso describing the model specifications and other details. Photographs are uniformly curled on the sides, and rounded at the corners, but apart from a few minor corner creases, in very good condition overall. Attendant price list (30pp.), has a few pencil corrections (likely done by the company), and a short tear to the front wrap. A lone cloth sample measuring about 8" x 11" and with the label "Steel Doe" is also present (wrinkled, but otherwise well-preserved). The black cloth folder which housed these materials is still present, though appears to be missing a top, which would have had a clasp to close the folder. What remains is mildly edgeworn and soiled, but still presentable. A fantastic group of professional photographs which show in clear detail the varying caskets offered by this Pennsylvania company.… Read More

Description:
[Tokyo]: Tochiku Manufacturing Co., Ltd, 1950. Staplebound. Near fine. Oblong octavo, 6pp., illustrated. Near fine in the publisher's stapled wraps, with mild edgewear. A scarce and nicely illustrated catalogue of rattan furniture made in Japan in the first decades after World War II. The Tochiku Manufacturing Company's factory and headwyarters were situated near the Washington Heights and Grant Heights neighborhoods in Tokyo, which were residential neighborhoods built for the families of American occupation forces. The catalogue is in English, and clearly aimed at that market, as well as the export market (as noted in their marketing copy on the rear wrapper). Not separately listed in OCLC; a nice survey of mid-century rattan furniture designs from the height of this design craze.

Description:
[Cleveland], 1960. Very good +. Betty Parsson. Nineteen pencil drawings with watercolor on large-format cardstock. Most drawings measure about 20" x 25", while three are smaller (about 15" x 18"). Parsson, a student at the Cleveland Institute of Art sometime in the middle of the 20th century, drew and colored these drawings depicting various styles of art and architecture, from ancient Egypt to sleek, modern, mid-century design. Labeled designs include Romanesque, Chippendale, Modern, Hepplewhite, Gothic Architecture, Early American, Queen Anne, and several more - even Ancient Egypt. Sixteen of the nineteen drawings are brought to life with watercolor, while the other three pencil drawings are colorless. She shows excellent grasp of the design concepts, depicting both full room scenes and also individual elements, such as wall sconces, columns, and the like. Attractive; rich with attention to detail and bright color. Apart from the odd tack mark or short closed tear, all drawings… Read More

Description:
[Stanton, Delaware]: [Delaware Park], 1953. Very good. Nice group of large photographs of horse races held at Delaware Park in 1952-3. 9 prints measuring 8"x10" (plus one duplicate), unmarked, along with eleven prints measuring 11" x 14" (plus one duplicate), some with markings. Photos are all generally curled (they had likely been rolled up for decades), but show only minimal edge creasing and no major wear. The smaller photographs mostly depict cameramen and show the "behind the scenes" of capturing horse racing on film, while the larger photographs (a few of which are stamped "Official Delaware Park Photograph") are generally action shots of horses mid-race. While some of these are simply captioned "1952" on the verso, one of them is captioned "Jamie K. (#3) at 1/4 pole winning "Leonard Richard" Stakes June 20th, 1953." Apart from this, there are few markings to indicate which exact races these were. There are two identical… Read More

Description:
[various places, mostly Ohio]: [various publishers], 1920. Very good +. A nicely focused grouping of dentistry-related ephemera, including billheads, receipts, correspondence, and promotional materials for various dental apparatuses. We count 8 pieces of correspondence, 23 receipts or bills, 10 flyers/handbills/instructions for appliances, and 7 other pieces, including what appears to be a prescription. Condition varies, but apart from minor edge tears and marginal dust-soiling, the overall contents are in very good or better condition. These appear to have all belonged to one A. M. Harrison, a dentist in Columbus, Ohio. He was, according to the Columbus Dental Society's webpage, the fourth president of that organization, his term lasting the year of 1899-1900. The most interesting piece of correspondence comes from one Marnie (Mamie?) Cooley of Columbus, who writes in part, "I presume you have given me up as a 'bad job.' There are several reasons why I have not been down. I have been half sick ever… Read More

Description:
[Cleveland]: [not published?], 1944. Very good. Thirteen photographs, each measuring about 3.5" x 6", including white border and frilly textured edges. Photographs uniformly - though mildly - curled, and there are a few stray stains and corner creases. Only significant flaw is a large chip to one photograph, which does not appear to have excised any significant content. Overall in very good condition. Accompanied by an envelope which reads, "East Ohio Gas Co. Oct. 20th 1944 E. 55th + St. Clair" (ground zero of the explosion, in eastern downtown Cleveland). The East Ohio Gas explosion occurred in inner-city Cleveland on October 20, 1944. An above-ground storage tank filled with liquefied natural gas emitted a vapor which ignited upon contact with sewage lines. The explosion was horrific and instantaneous, killing over 100 people and destroying a one-square-mile area in the Glenville neighborhood, leaving hundreds homeless and with their possessions destroyed. The blast has since been calculated as… Read More

(Pittsburgh, PA, or vicinity): Filmet Photo Service (developer), 1946. Very good. Group of 20 snapshot black and white prints, each measuring about 4.5" x 3.25" (including white border). The prints were clearly lifted by a previous owner from a photo album, and have paper residue on the verso from the album leaves. They are nevertheless otherwise clean and uncurled; very good. The photos depict a dog show somewhere in or near Pittsburgh. Each print is stampe don the verso with a date in September 1946. There are some shots of dogs leaping over a jump, others of them stading obediently by their very ordinary-looking owners. Two signs from the crowd read "Humane Society" and "Pittsburgh Obedience Training Club.

New York: D. O. Haynes & Co, 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good-. Quarto, 8pp. of text, plus 152pp. of ruled leaves. First leaf used, ELSE BLANK. In the publisher's 3/4 maroon over red-brown cloth, about very good, with wear to the corners and spotting to the cloth, but clean, crisp, and bright internally. Much more interesting than many business-specific ledger books of the period, this one contains 8 pages of printed text containing the full text of the 1914 Harrison Narcotics Tax Act (a. k. a. Opium and Coca Leaves Trade Restrictions Act). Clearly the brand new law (passed at the end of the year right before publication of this volume) was making a number of druggists nervous, considering the new regulations on the products that they sold on a daily basis, and thus this publisher of ledger books felt compelled to include the law in the otherwise blank ledger books. Though there is only one page of recorded sales, the contents are quite impressive. Nearly all sales are for codeine,… Read More
