An excellent exhibition catalogue based on the portrait archives representing the life work of the antiquarian bookseller Baron Hans-Dietrich von Diepenbroick-Grueter (1902-1980), which were bequeathed to the Landesmuseum. The exhibition herein described took place during 1983-1984 at the Landesmuseum in Münster, the Kestner-Museum in Hannover, and the Antikenmuseen Berlin. Following a series of scholarly essays, including Frank Berger's "Die Geschichte der antiken Numismatik," is a remarkable series of 181 biographies written by Berghaus, accompanied by period illustrations of "1506-1640 Humanisten, Philologen, Historiker, Numismatiker, Sammler, Künstler." Kunze's little-known article, written in the form of a letter to Dr. Samuel Mitchill though intended for publication, is one of the very few detailed portrayals of coin collecting in the early days of the Republic. Cover has some wear; plates with mostly marginal staining; else near fine. A scarce work by an early English coin dealer. Till (d. 1844) practiced his trade at 17 Great Russell Street, which had been a famous salon and card room of the 18th century. His book on coronation medals is perhaps most notable for being illustrated with two plates executed via the medal rule machine, which used a pantographic technique to produce the most accurate and detailed numismatic illustrations of its day.
