William Collins (1838-1890) was born in County Tyrone to an Irish nationalist family; as an immigrant he fought for the Union in the American Civil War and as a Fenian invaded Canada with O'Neill. His first book, a compilation of Ballads, Songs, and Poems, was published in 1875. His works are quite scarce these days. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition of an early-Irish historical novel; it was republished in 1896. Rare. Pebbled green cloth binding, decoratively stamped in black, with a gilt harp on the front cover; titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; frontis illustration, then 209 pages. London: George Routledge and Sons This is Volume Thirteen of an unknown set, in a Fine Binding by Henry Sotheran. Red ribbed cloth with red leather tips and spine. The spine has five raised bands with titling and rules in gilt. Marbled endpapers and page ends. Frontis illustration and others within. There is no publication date, but COPAC reports Routledge editions in 1872 and 1892 and this seems to be a reasonable range. This is Volume I only of "The Daltons." New York: Scribner Paperback Fiction Published By Simon & Schuster, 1998. This is a Good only copy of the First Edition (stated "First Scribner Paperback Fiction edition 1999"; full number line). Clean text; 500 pages, with a Reading Group Guide at the rear. This copy has been SIGNED by the author on the title page. San Francisco: Co. & Sons, 1971. Dan O'Neill's popular comic strip "Odd Bodkins" ran in the San Francisco Chronicle from 1964-1970; but he is also known for his work with the "Air Pirates" underground comix collective that was pursued legally by the Disney corporation for supposed copyright infringements. This is a Very Good copy of the second in this series. There is a fictitious publication date on the cover of "December 1947," but 1971is more correct. The cover lists "Co. & Sons" as the publisher, and on the rear cover as "Northern California Power Failure," but probably Comcs and Comix in Berkeley. Clean tex consists of fifty pages of black and white drawings. Light edgewear, tiny chip to one corner, and a crease across the front cover; there is a previous-owner name on the first page. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing of the First Editions, bound together in an omnibus; "Volume VII" of an unknown set. Mottled paper-covered boards with black leather tips and spine; gilt ruling and titling on the spine. Clean text; 274 pages, 145 pages, and 172 pages. Floral endpapers. The spine is rubbed heavily at the head and foot, lightly at the edges; one rear tip is soft; else very little wear. The textblock is clear and bright, with no foxing; perfectly readable today. Boston: Wendell Phillips Hall Association, 1892. O'Connell and Phillips were connected by their anti--slavery advocacy. Phillips gave this speech at the O'Connell Centenary in Boston in August of 1875. This is a reprint of the edition first published by Lee & Shepard in 1884. The cover notes that it is "Sold for the Benefit of the Memorial Fund" for 25 cents. Not common. Softcover, in gray paper wraps. Titling and an engraving of Phillips (1811-1854) in black on the front cover. Clean text; 34 pages; very bright and clear. Boston: Franklin Press: Rand, Avery, & Company, 1884. In August 1875, at the O’Connell centenary celebrations in Boston, three famous American abolitionists recalled the importance of O’Connell’s role in the American anti-slavery movement. The rators were John Greenlief Whittier, William Lloyd Garrison, and Wendell Phillips. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of booklet reproducing the famous speech by Phillips, published in the year prior to his death. Not common. Softcover, with blue-green paper wraps. Dublin & Cork: The Talbot Press Limited, 1929. MacDonagh (1912-1968), was a poet and a barrister, was a co-editor with Lennox Robinson, of "The Oxford Book of Irish Verse." His father had been executed by the British for his part in the Easter Uprising of 1916. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Not common. Green cloth binding with black titling on the spine. Clean text; 386 pages, indexed. Corners bumped; spine has faded to tan but all titling still bright; rubbing to the head and foot of the spine. New York: American News Company, 1878. Joaquin Miller, pseudonym for Cincinnatus H. Miller (1837-1913), certainly one of the more interesting rogues of American literature. His picaresque life in the California Gold Rush served as the basis for his sobriquet aas "the Poet of the Sierras." This is a Very Good Plus copy of the First Edition, edited by A.V.D. Honeyman. Chicago: The Reilly & Lee Co., 1903. The most famous book by this Anglo-Irish writer (1861-1933), noted for her short stories.The stories were originally published in McClure's Magazine in 1901-1902.In 1959 Darby became an exceptionally popular Disney movie - although reportedly the literary critic Cyril Cusack savaged it. This is a really charming book, written in dialogue, and while it is usually classified as a "children's book" it can be enjoyed by all as a series of folk tales. There is a frontis drawing by John R. Neill, who also illustrated over thirty of Baum's "Oz" books. This is a Fine copy of the First Edition (Second Issue). Not a common book. He seems to have often had African-Americans as a subject, and wrote in dialect. This is a Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy of the First Edition, lacking a dustjacket.
