New Orleans: Faruk von Turk, 1976. Third Edition. A reprint of two George Cable articles that were originally published in the February and April 1886 issues of The Century Magazine. This edition was printed by Faruk von Turk (Justin Winston), a New Orleans-based jazz aficionado and sci-fi fan involved in many fandom groups in New Orleans. In his introduction Winston characterizes the articles as "some of the primary sources for the scholar either of the history of New Orleans in general or of jazz music. Edward Windsor Kemble's original illustrations are included in this reprint. Stapled, illustrated wrappers (9 ¼" x 6"), 39, [1] p., illustrations. A near fine copy.

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. Small octavo. Yellow cloth stamped in black; 368 pp. A Near Fine copy with just a hint of rubbing and dust-soiling; no dust jacket. Allan Updegraff (1883-1965) was an American-born writer, poet, and editor who died an expatriate in Paris in 1965. He is largely forgotten and copies of many of his books are quite scarce. We only find one other copy of this title in commerce (and in less-than-collectible condition) and only a dozen copies found via OCLC. Updegraff seems to be best remembered as a roommate and close friend of Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) when they were at Yale together; they were later employed as "servants" at Upton Sinclair's short-lived utopian Helicon Home Colony and Updegraff married Sinclair's fiance of two years, the author Edith Summers Kelley (1884-1956). Arlington, Va: American Constitutional League, 1943. An intra-war pamphlet published by the Arlington chapter of the American Constitutional League, which was founded in 1943. The pamphlet's title is taken from a quote by Congressman William Lemke, one of many quotes from various newspaper articles and speeches warning of the Socialistic and Communistic tendencies prevailing in the U.S. As was typical in anti-Communist propaganda of the time, employees of the U.S. government accused of Socialist or Communist leanings are identified. Members of the Arlington branch included N. C. Hines, W. S. Hoge, Jr., & Harold H. Heischman. Stapled wrappers (3 " x 8 "), 14 p. Creasing and light wear, VG. Not found by us in OCLC.

Geneva, N.Y.: Press of W. F. Humphreys, 1912. First edition. 12mo. Illustrated cloth boards; 148 pp.; map, illustrations by H. DeF. Patterson. An account of the author's trip across the plains to Denver in 1865 and of life in the Far West in the later sixties. Includes a "Map of Trails Leading from Missouri River to Denver, Colorado, 1865" by Henry Bowles. A Near Fine copy with scant rubbing to board edges.

Liverpool, West Virginia: White Power Publications, 1978. Reprint. A primer of German anti-Semitic propaganda discussing the Jewish role in ritual murder, prostitution, international finance, Freemasonry, etc. Originally published in Germany in 1930, this edition was reprinted by George Dietz's White Power imprint in the original German fraktur. Stapled, photocopied wrappers (8 ¼" x 5 ½"), 32 p. In German. Light wear and soiling to wrappers.

Hannover: Niedersächfische Lageszietung GmbH, [ca. 1938]. First edition. Very Good. 8vo; stapled, swastika-emblazoned wrappers, 47 pp. In German. Some chipping to wrapper fore-edge with a few chunks missing. An enumeration of the 25-point program of the NSDAP, publicly proclaimed by Hitler in 1920. Each point is followed by a list of dates and events illustrating the "milestones" of the Program during the first five years of the Third Reich. No edition stated leading us to believe that this might indeed be the first edition, esp. since the second edition was increased to 79 pp. Numerous records exist in OCLC, although we could find none for this fragile and ephemeral first edition.

Santa Barbara: Dawn, 1915. An issue of this little magazine founded in late 1913 as The Germ by the millionaire social reformer, educator, and Renaissance Man, Prince (later Pryns, Prynce) Charles Hopkins (1885-1970). In January 1914, the magazine was renamed The Dawn (due to readers' dislike for the disease-sounding name) and Sydney Greenbie (1889-1960) enlisted as its associate editor. By 1915, Greenbie was the sole editor, as well as the director of Boyland (see below) and operated in that capacity until the magazine's dissolution around July, 1916. We suspect that all of the content for this issue was written by Greenbie, including a profile of painter Karl Schmidt and a discussion of Futurism & Cubism; an article on teaching and teachers; two poems; an essay titled "Exiled from Earth - a phantasy of War and Labor"; short editorials on a number of topics; etc. The Germ/Dawn began publication a year after Hopkins founded Boyland, a libertarian, experimental school for boys inspired by the… Read More

A scarce document that includes the background, beliefs and purpose, Constitution, rules and regulations of the Worlds Comrades, a Tribe, a freethought utopian group, that according to the front wrapper was founded by a William Hetrick. The first half of the document contains a lengthy message from Hetrick on the purpose : "I proclaim the truth as I have found it, by a life time of calm and fearless thought, and earnestly endeavor to arouse the dormant energies of human beings to a realization of their only refuge from sorrow, which is in the power and vastness of their understanding and the universal freedom of their thoughts, without which no man can have true liberty among his fellow beings or hold dominion over circumstances, or guide his course as he drifts toward the unknown realms of the future on the might current of condition. First published in Latin by Liseux in 1879 as "De Sodomia Tractatus," this second edition was published in French, and an English language edition was published in 1893, also by Liseux, as "Peccatum Mutum." "De la sodomie" is a chapter taken from the Italian Franciscan priest, Ludovico Maria Sinistrari's (1622-1701), "De Delictis et Pœnis Tractatus Absolutissimus (1700)," a notorious work cataloguing specific sins and their just punishment. Sinistrari's work aided the Inquisition, although it was later added to the Vatican's Index of banned works until 1753. Pieces missing from the top portion of the spine, the top corner of the front panel, and along the bottom edge of the front panel.

Published by the author, 1969. First edition. Large 8vo; red cloth with gilt-printed spine, map endpapers, xiii, 289 pp, photographs, maps, dust jacket. The author, a successful banker and Congressman, recounts his experiences in WWI, much of it in epistolary fashion. Profusely illustrated with maps and photographs. Privately printed and therefore uncommon. The book itself shows no blemishes, although the dust jacket is rubbed and worn and is missing a large chunk from the lower front panel.

[New York]: Provisional National Government, 1971. A scarce flyer for the short-lived political party founded by independent rightist, conspriacist and Church of Satan member Ken Duggan. Duggan spent much of the 1970s trying to unify extreme right and extreme left individuals and groups against what he perceived to be the true threat to democracy: a cartel of international banking and corporate interests all controlled by the Illuminati and exemplified in NYC by the Rockefeller family. [Los Angeles?]: [Harry Warner?], 1939. First English language edition. An English language translation and facsimile reproduction of the widely circulated German pamphlet Rassenschändung (1937) by the German race theorist Dietrich Hutten, in which he describes the irreconcilability of German racial purity and Judeo-Christianity. As stated by Hutten at the beginning, "In order to make the German finally realize the importance and value of his race, this little pamphlet will prove - in broad outline - how Judaism, with the aid of Christianity, has served to defile and to destroy the race" (p. 3). Although no editor or publisher is listed, this reprint was apparently undertaken by Jewish studio boss Harry Waner in 1939 and distributed to Warner employees. A scarce surviving broadside (9 ½" x 15") printing the proposed platform, constitution and resolution of the Democracy of Thomas Jefferson (officially, The Democracy of Thomas Jefferson of the City of New York), a political party organized to oppose the Tammany Hall Democrats - and their candidate, Justice Robert A. Van Wyck - in the 1897 mayoral election in New York City. The Party nominated the single tax prophet, Henry George, who gave his acceptance speech on October 5 at Cooper Union Hall. George, who was furiously trying to finish what he believed would be his magnum opus, "The Science of Political Economy," through himself into the campaign.
