Pocket on back pastedown. Octavo. Illustrations cut from pear & maple wood by Steven Chayt. Headpieces and two larger illustrations in color on double-title page. The type is Frederic W. Goudy's Kennerley, designed in 1911, handset by Meryl and Steven Chayt, who printed the book on an 8x12 treadle press on Rives lightweight buff paper. Bound by Earle Gray. Some fading to spine and upper front cover. Signed by the illustrator on title page and inscribed by the author in purple ink on the colophon: "Arthur E. Lane. This is copy 'g,' containing the first draft of "In a Place of Elegy." A near fine copy.

Ashton (b. 1834) is the author of a number of valuable books on English popular culture, including Real Sailor-Songs (1891), A History of English Lotteries (1893), and A Righte Merrie Christmasse! (1894), all published by the Leadenhall Press. Paris: Nicolle…re-imprimé par John Murray, 1813 First published edition of Madame de Stael's work on Germany, which contains her most important work in literary criticism. The true first edition of 1810 was seized before publication by Napoleonic authorities, who were insulted by de Stael's championship of another culture, and only four copies are known to survive. The present edition was published in England while de Stael was exiled for the third time. Contemporary reddish-brown calf over marbled boards, gilt-ruled spines with dark brown morocco labels. . Three volumes, octavo. Spines faded, with light staining, binding extremities rubbed, one gathering slightly loose in Volume I, intermittent light foxing. Though the present work was promised in 'De Motu Cordis' it was never put into final literary form by him. It is published here for the first time from notes found in the British Museum.

A very good, clean copy, preserved in modern brown cloth clamshell slipcase. The Preparation for the Gospel is a significant work by Eusebius Caesariensis (AD 260/265 – 339/340), who is best known for writing the first surviving history of the Christian Church as a chronologically-ordered account, complete from the time of the Apostles to his own time. Amsterdam: H. du Sauzet, 1738 First edition of Huet's treatise on the weakness of the human mind in which he discusses the limits of reason. Contemporary mottled calf. Gilt spine with burgundy morocco label, edges stained red, marbled endpapers. . Title-page in black and red, with lovely engraved vignette of a printing press. Joints lightly rubbed. A very good copy. Huet (1630-1721), bishop of Avranches, was the leading French Catholic skeptic and a noted scholar in the areas of mathematics, astronomy, optics and chemistry. He edited Origen, translated the pastorals of Longus, wrote a tale called Diane de Castro, and defended, in a treatise on the origin of romance, the reading of fiction. With the assistance of Madame Dacier, he edited the Delphin Classics, a comprehensive edition of the Latin classics in about sixty volumes. His great library and manuscripts were bequeathed to the Jesuits and were ultimately bought by the king for the royal library.

Goedart (1617-1668) was born in Middelburg, Netherlands. He had very little formal education, but his interest in art, particularly watercolor, led him to careful, scientific observations of local and regional insect populations. Although he was not a classifier and believed that certain larvae were the product of spontaneous generation, he eventually became a respected authority in entomology.
