Description:
[London]: Te Daily News, 1910. Large (9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches) souvenir card that was sold at the famous Bournemouth aviation meet of 1910. It is almost entirely taken up with photographic portraits of aviators at the Meet; Paulhan, Farman, Rolls, Graham-White, Grace and Cockburn. Also there are two portraits of city officials and three scenic views of the town. Unfortunately this meeting was also the place where Charles Rolls (a director and co-founder of Rolls-Royce Ltd.) crashed and died in his Wright brothers airplane (his image is on the right side of the card)., His Wright flyer was built in England rather than by the American Wright company, and his crash was attributed to the inferior construction. In 1910 Bournemouth was celebrating its centenary, and as part of the festivities held an aviation meeting at Southbourne Aerodrome where 19 competitors could compete for cash prizes. Categories included longest flight, speed, altitude and slowest speed. The world speed record at the time was just 47… Read More

Description:
Los Angeles: D. A. Hufford & Co., 1902. Second edition (published same year as the first and exactly the same; probably just a second printing or perhaps just a sales ploy). Twelvemo. 43, [1, publisher's ads] pp. plus 17 full page photographic illustrations and one plate. Publisher's stiff green wrappers with black lettering. Nicely bound into green cloth with gilt spine lettering. Gutter margin with placement holes for 3-ring binder. Very clean and attractive. A very early account of a trip to Death Valley. Edwards discounts it as 'apocryphal' but there can be do doubt that the trip was taken. The author and his party entered Death Valley by way of Saugus, Antelope Valley and Randsburg. While perhaps some of Swamper Ike's tales may have been fanciful the details of their route and watering holes are not. We also must commend Hufford for his early early attitudes of conservation: ""There has been a great deal of talk the last few years about turning water upon the desert and cutting it up in 40-acre… Read More
