A lovely book, with seven multi-color wood engravings made from Francesco Clemente's originals. Designed by Dan Carr, and printed by Art Larson in the French style (double pages) on handmade Japanese Ogawashi paper. Typeset by Julia Ferrari and Dan Carr. Woodblocks were cut by Michael Berdan and editioned at Evans Editions in New York.
One of an edition limited to 300 numbered copies signed by the artist, Francesco Clemente. See History of the LEC p. 231. New.

San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1972. A complete set of the eleven folders.Various authors of each of the ten folders and an introduction by Oscar Lewis in the first folder, with the entire set under the general editorial direction of Martin Mitau. Each part is four to eight pages in length, with illustrations primarily from contemporary photographs. Pages are 8 1/2 x 10 inches. The set was designed and printed by Clifford Burke at his Cranium Press in San Francisco. Composition is by Mackenzie & Harris, Inc. The typeface is Goudy's Italian Old Style. The folders are fine, and the blue cloth covered slipcase with leather spine labels and the heavy board chemise with quarter cloth spine are in very good condition, with some chipping of the labels and slight wear, small residue from a gum label on the chemise.

These ten poems printed for the first time form part of "Cave Birds," a sequence of twenty poems written by Hughes between 1974-75 to Baskin's drawings. The poems are published together with prints from the related drawings and each poem is accompanied by a facsimile of a draft selected from the poet's working papers. The elephant folio sized prints are signed by Baskin, numbered, and dated. The book is quarter white paper, with hand-made chocolate paper sides and light brown label stamped in black. Unpaginated. Portfolio is 20 x 14 1/2 inches. The Baskin prints are printed on Barcham Green paper. The text of the poems is printed on handmade paper by F. Amatruda, Amalfi. The matching burlap covered fitted portfolio with ties contains both the prints and the book. Number 93 of an edition limited to one hundred copies, each copy of the book signed by the poet, Ted Hughes, and the illustrator, Leonard Baskin. Fine condition.

Pomona, NY: Kelly-Winterton Press, 2004. First Edition. Leaf book with four leaves of Pickering books tipped in, of which one taken from one of his minute Diamond Classics, is an extra insert for this copy. In addition to the list, it is lavishly illustrated with images of pages from many of his books--half the book is taken with all of the reproductions. The images are in black and white, and a few are in color or black and red. The title page and one other page of his splendid Euclid are beautifully reproduced, but reduced in size. One of three hundred copies. 8 1/2 x 5 5/8 inches. 56 pages of text, about as many pages of reproductions of pages, unpaginated but indexed back to the bibliographical entry. In addition to writing the introduction, the author also assembled the text by various authors: Peter Porter, D.H. Lawrence, Father Bernard Walke, Jack Clemo, John Whitworth, Thomas Hardy, Charles Causley, Canon Hawker, Patricia Beer, and Sabine Baring-Gould. Lavishly illustrated with scraperboard drawings by Alan Richards. These drawings range from quarter-page images to two-page spreads. The boards are covered in a paper printed with another scraperboard drawing by the artist. 12 1/8 x 8 3/8 inches. 48 pages. Number 128 of an edition of 326 copies (36 of which were hand-colored under the direction of the artist). Signed by Richards and Harrison.

Texts include A Note by the Printer, a history of the Press and its types, a profile of Cobden-Sanderson by the noted calligrapher Edward Johnston, C-S's own "The Ideal Book or Book Beautiful", and a list of Doves publications. Designed and printed by John Henry Nash. Number 99 of 339 copies. Bound in limp vellum, which has a few very small surface imperfections, one affecting the spine title. The vellum has gone slightly rogue, with slight warping of the covers and some separation of the pastedowns from the vellum. t.e.g. A very nice example of one fine printer's tribute to another!

San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1986. Letters compiled and annotated by Jess S. Crisler with an introduction by James D. Hart. This is the second time the Book Club has published a collection of Norris letters. The first had been completed in 1956 by Franklin Walker, and this second edition includes all of those letters with new annotations as well as the thirty letters found later and published in the Quarterly Newsletters of the Club. The title page portrait is a wood cut by Rik Olson. Two portraits of Norris, a map, and a reproduction of a letter by Norris, as well as an extensive bibliography, are also included. Printed by Will Henry Powers and Wesley B. Tanner, quarter bound in cloth with paper covered boards and a black spine label with gold lettering. Original plain paper dust jacket. One of 500 copies. Harlan number 182. Fine in a slightly sunned dust jacket.

Generously illustrated with color photographs of the books and photographs of Jane Grabhorn with the Grabhorn brothers and with William Roth. One of 500 copies designed by Andrew Hoyem and printed at his Arion Press. Octavo. 214 pages. New in the original publisher's shipping carton.The author was Jane Grabhorn's partner in running the Colt Press and in addition found time for an illustrious career in government, academia, and business. A rich contribution to the history of printing in San Francisco.
