Description:
Dole, France. Good with no dust jacket. Ephemera. On offer is an outstanding collection of documents concerning the French noble family of de Falletans, which traces its roots back to the mid-11th century. The family title derives from the village of Falletans in eastern France in the France-Comte region, around the town of Dole. First historical references date from 1040 when the name in its current form is used. The region had been divided into several fiefs including Falletans. The first historical reference to a 'family of Falletans' is de Vautravers in 1494. At some point, the family was granted the title Marquis de Falletans. In the mid-1500's, a local farmer named Antoine Garnier obtained a neighbouring fiefdom, within the vicinity of the village of Fallentans. In time the family altered their name to Garnier de Falletans. Several hundred years later, this would blow up into a protracted legal dispute over the name 'Falletans'. The final result was a declaration… Read More

Havana, Cuba: Chinese Coolie Trade Ships Havana Cuba. Good with no dust jacket. Non-Book. On offer is an archive of six depositions by Chinese coolie labourers, taken after their disembarkment from a coolie ship that transported them from Macau to Havana, Cuba to serve out their eight year service contract. The Chinese coolie trade, a system of indentured labor that targeted young, poor Chinese men, operated from 1847-1874. The coolie trade took place, in large part, between the shipping port in Macao (now a part of China, then under Portuguese rule) and Havana, Cuba (then under Spanish control). Coolies were transported from China on ships, many of which had formerly been used as African slave ships (Yun & Laremont, 2001). The coolie ships often had slave names (eg Africano, Mauritius) or ironic names (Dreams, Hope, Live Yankees, Wandering Jew) (Yun & Laremont, 2001, p. 110). Many did not survive the journey, with “approximately 16,400 Chinese coolies [dying] on European and… Read More

New York. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1877. Non-Book. On offer is a detailed letter written and signed by Edward Abiel Washburn [1819-1881]. Washburn writes from New York to "My dear George Hubert (? ) ". His letter includes four chatty pages. It seems Hubert (? ) has sent Washburn some lyrics for a hymn, for which Washburn is grateful. Throughout the chatty letter, Washburn touches on receiving the "pastoral lyric[s]" for his hymns, his travels, his faith, gossip about community members, the "Catholic spirit", and closes with encouragement for his letter's recipient, stating: "...when 'my stammering tongue' is dumb, I hope young and [genius? Generous? ] voices like yours will speak more clearly. Yours Cordially, EA Washburn". This letter is a fascinating insight into the brilliant brain of Washburn. EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND. Good. 1886. On offer is a couple (2) of elegantly written highly detailed cookbooks of Mary Ann Prosser nee Taylor (1862?-1915), a wife of Sir John Prosser, Writer to the Signet, and grandmother of William David Prosser, Lord Prosser, a prominent lawyer and advocate for the arts in Edinburgh. One of the books has 43 pages filled, the other 88 pages. There is a handwritten date, July 1886, in one of the books, which was two months before her wedding, and the address of their family home in Edinburgh: 4 Bellevue Crescent. The books contain many recipes typical for Scottish and English cuisine of that time, and of French dishes. Unlike many cookbooks that presume previous cooking experience, this one contains minute nuances about cooking times, quantity of ingredients, kitchen utensils to use, giving an insight into lifestyle and diet of a well-off Edinburgh family in 1880s. The first book starts with the basic recipes how to boil vegetables, fry herring and haddock:… Read More

TUFNELL PARK, LONDON ENGLAND UK. Very Good. 1900. On offer is a super, original late 19th Century, early 20th Century manuscript homage to the great 18th Century actor David Garrick [Wikipedia: 'English actor, playwright, theatre manager and producer who influenced nearly all aspects of theatrical practice throughout the 18th century and was a pupil and friend of Dr Samuel Johnson'] handwritten by super 'fan' Frederick Harker of Tufnell Park in London's north end. Harker has transcribed extracts from reviews, playbills, essays [on acting in Macbeth given as a lecture by Garrick], newspaper articles, tracts from plays etc., to create and amazing paean to the actor with hundreds of hours to accomplish in a beautiful, perfect hand. He served at the 5th battalion of the 2nd infantry brigade hailed from western Canada, and known as "Tuxford's Dandies" after the name of its first commander. Written April 1, 1953, a mere four years before his death, in Roslyn Heights NY on Morley's letterhead with his New York City address hand-canceled in pencil. The letter to 'George', seemingly an old college and, perhaps, fraternity brother, turning down his request for Morley's presence at an event. Some first names mentioned, enticingly interesting but obscure. Description:
Austria Germany. Good with no dust jacket. 1960. Non-Book. On offer is a two-page report on the state of the armed forces of Austria in 1955. The document is titled “The Armed Forces In Readiness For Austria”. Although undated, context suggests that it was written in the late 1960s. The author of the report is unknown. The report describes the effect of Austria’s signing of the State Treaty on May 15, 1955 that, among other terms, permitted Austria to re-establish her armed forces and confirm her neutrality. This position of neutrality continues to this day. The paper goes on to outline the steps taken to re-establish the Armed Forces and some of the roles they play, internally and also under the auspices of the United Nations. For a historian interested in the steps that European nations had to take to return from the ashes of WWII, this is a fine synopsis of one country’s efforts. The 2-sided document measures 11.75 inches by 8.25 inches. The condition of the typed… Read More

France, 1799. Small handwritten recipe for a glue to hold porcelain together. Blending lead, oils, paper and flour. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world," he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100,000 books and at least 60,000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases, Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Boston, 1775. On offer is a fascinating and intriguing manuscript relic of Christian faith being a handwritten c1770s manuscript copy of "A LETTER WRITTEN BY OUR BLESSED LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST AND FOUND UNDER A GREAT STONE SIXTY FIVE YEARS AFTER HIS CRUSIFIXION". This story and its variations of the teachings of Jesus appeared in several forms throughout Europe in earlier times, and it would appear that someone had secured an English copy published in London, and was perhaps preparing this as a copy for publication in Boston. However there is no record of it ever being published in America at this time but the rag paper is undoubtedly 18th Century and was copied as a keepsake. The letter states that keepers of a copy handwritten by the owner will protect homes and homeowners from pestilence, plague and lighting. Eight pages, size 5 x 7¼, folds, handmade, rag paper, string bound at one time, normal aging with minor stains, overall G+.. Good+. 8vo - over 7¾" -… Read More
