Chicago: Schulte, 1891. First published a year earlier, this utopian political novel, was one of the nineteenth-century’s great crackpot books. In Bleiler. Inscribed by the author the year before his death, "Every hour since this book was written has shown that it is prophecy. Ignatius Donnelly. Feb. 22, 1900." A former Congressman and Populist Party founder, Donnelly’s books (Atlantis, The Great Cryptogram) promoted his weird ideas. Hinges weak; very good.

Garden City: Doubleday, 1951. First Edition. Basis for the great 1954 film of the same title. A near fine copy in a first issue, generally presumed second state, “City Boy”dust jacket, with minor wear and soiling and some short chips and tears. This is nearly always incorrectly referred to as a second issue. Clearly, those copies of the jacket mentioning the Pulitzer Prize are later, more likely to be later printings rather than later issues (a jacket “issue” would have been supplied on first printings of the book. Possibly? Yes. Likely? No.). However, it appears to this cataloguer that the attribution of “The City Boy” as opposed to “City Boy” on the back panel preceding relies on conjecture and supposition, a belief apparently based on those copies noting the Pulitzer Prize dropping “The.” This conclusion is possible, even logical, but hardly definitive. Measuring approximately 7 x 11 3/4.” In a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. These days, advance copies (sometimes a photocopied typescript) comprise a significant portion of the publicity for a publication, often appearing to outnumber the trade copies issued. However, the expensive format of these proofs only allowed for a small number of copies to be prepared for the most important reviewers or in-house use, such as soliciting and securing further rights. This represents the final, printed novel in its earliest form. While no precise number is known, it is unlikely that more than a handful or two were produced. No place of publication: privately printed, n.d. [1934]. First Edition. One of 100 copies printed for Powell’s wedding; spine a little faded; near fine. This cataloguer has never seen a copy that was not inscribed, but this is an especially poignant and meaningful one; presented around 1968 to his older son on the occasion of his own wedding. “Tristram and Virginia with love. This was printed as a wedding present. The musical section is by Constant Lambert. It was composed during a period of insomnia. The printer was much known for never being sober. AP.” Part of the joke was that this satiric poem was so poorly printed by a drunkard that its many errors had to be corrected in ink by the author.

Boston: privately printed, 1931. First Edition. Presentation copy; inscribed by the author in 1933. Fine in what appears to the original unprinted dust jacket (some staining and wear).

New York: Edward J. Clode, 1937. First Edition. Inscribed by the author, “To Pamela Seibert with best wishes for a successful writing career. Otis Adelbert Kline. 3-6-45.” Minor staining; faint tape offsetting marks on the endpapers, one over a couple of words of the inscription, not affecting its legibility in the least, nor is it aesthetically objectionable; very good in a worn dust jacket. New York: Macmillan, 1903. First Edition of Jack London’s best-known book. About a fine copy in what is claimed to be the earliest dust jacket. The jacket has minor restoration at the extremities and some interior tissue strengthening at the folds. In a custom quarter morocco slipcase.

New York: Scribner’s, 1911. First American Edition. Fine in a very good dust jacket with a thumbnail-sized chip at the top right hand corner of the front panel and two interior tape mends. Uncommon in dust jacket.

New York: Franklin Watts, 1948. First Edition. Ink note on the front free endpaper regarding the awarding of this book to a student. About fine in a minutely worn dust jacket.

Burbank: Warner Brothers, 1941. Folio; orange and red wrappers; 36 pages including the wrappers; folded across the center; very good. The film starred Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, and was directed by Capra. This brochure offered theater owners and bookers a large selection of promotional materials to order.

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1943. An exceptionally large and lavish campaign book for the motion picture based on the novel of the same title. Spiral bound; approximately 15” x 20”; color wrappers; some wear; good; 60 pages, one leaf of which has had an ad excised. The book features ads, articles, and information on the movie, the book, and the author.

Elgin, Illinois: Cook, 1930. First Edition. College football. Owner’s name inside the front cover; very good in a dust jacket with minor chips, tears, and two interior tape mends. Elgin was renowned for its watch manufacturing, but not for publishing.

New York: Farrar & Rinehart, 1944. First American Edition. Near fine in dust jacket. In Bleiler; a voodoo novel.

Boston: Little, Brown, 1933. First American Edition. Back hinge cracked; very good. The front endpapers have mounted pages signed by the cast and crew of the 1934 film, including producer Jesse Lasky, screenwriter Ernest Pascal, director Irving Cummings, stars Warner Baxter, H.B. Warner and many more.
