An antiquary of Flemish descent, his early interest in gem collecting as part of his cabinet of curiosities eventually spawned interest in Greco-Roman intaglio gems; his collection purchased in 1609 on behalf of Henry, Prince of Wales -- with more than a representative sampling of specimens here. Born in 1494, the engravings herein are early efforts by a highly skilled engraver who learned his art at a very early age: the earliest known print by him (Mohammed and the Murdered Monk) dates from 1508, when he was perhaps only 14. 1524 date appears at lower left corner of the engraving at Abel's knee.
