The Portuguese first explored the island in 1512. The Dutch conquered the island in the 1600's and several Dutch names exist on the map

The tipped-in 4-1/2": x 9" additional folding panel to western Brazil has become unglued at the bottom causing light abrasions along the neatline, o/w fine. A large detailed map of Brasil, with the territories belonging to the French and the Dutch indicated.

Small spot to upper and lower blank margin else a good crisp impression. A detailed map of South America focussing on the Chile and Argentina. The provinces of Pampas, Cordoba and Buenos Ayres are under Chilean rule while the whole southern tip of South America is classified as Patagonia extending northwards to St. Andres on the Atlantic Ocean.

A few short tears along fold lines to top and bottom blank margins, very light browning along fold lines and cartouche area, impression a little weak, but on the whole quite good. Depicts the Northern hemisphere from Labrador to Lapland. The eastern coast along Greenland is marked as being only a "guess" of it's outline.

Offsetting else very good. A pair of very good sea charts the left hand side showing the island of Zante, the tip of Cephalonia and Morea. The right hand chart shows Morea, the Island of Serigo and the tip of Candia (Crete)
