Pasted marbled endpapers, lacks free endpapers. The only marking to the book is on the rear blank page, upside down, and neatly penned "Benedicte Elisabeth / Sharffenstein / Anno 1771 l.5 Juillet." Pages, all edges stained red, are clean and supple with minimal foxing, excepting the title page and following leaf which are moderately stained along thumb edge. Last text page has a corner crease. (Any pages that appeared before the title page are no longer extant.) Cover is gilt-titled on spine. Spine and corner leather heavily worn and the paper covering is rubbed to almost nothing. The only marking is previous owner's (George Walton Ogden) custom bookplate on front pasted endpaper and neatly penned on first blank leaf. Pages are clean and supple, front edge lightly stained, otherwise fine. Bound in hardcover of brown paper with blind embossed design to all panels. The spine was originally gilt titled but due to a large chip from top of spine and dulling of remaining type, the title is no longer legible. The cover is clean though moderately edgeworn; front hinge has 1" crack at top and rear hinge a 1" crack at bottom. Despite the cracks, hinges remain firm and the book block is tight. New York and London: Macmillan and Co., 1895. 1895 Edition (copyright 1894). VERY GOOD+ two-volume set in lovely decorative hardcovers. Complete with 13 black & white illustration plates by A. Castaigne, two of which are repeated as frontispieces. Books are crisp and clean, the only markings in the volumes are an owner name neatly penned to front free endpapers (Grace L. Beecher), and the custom bookplate of Sidney T. Clark affixed to front pasted endpapers. (A Grace Beecher married a Stanley T. Clark on May 4, 1911. Perhaps Grace added the bookplate once she was became Mrs. Clark.) Pages are clean and fine, firmly bound in green cloth with spines titled and decorated in gilt stamping, front covers in gilt and white stamping. Bindings and hinges are intact, no splits or cracks.
