Original 19 century Albumen Cabinet Card Photograph of Lakota Sioux Chief "Rain in the Face" by Western photographer D. F. Barry. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2". Titled "Rain in the Face - D.F. Barry copyright -Bismarck, DAK" on the mount with Barry's "Bismarck, North Dakota" imprint on verso. Although this cabinet card has experienced some wear, the subject of the image is still quite striking. Rain in the Face is dressed in a stunning feather headdress and holds a catlinite pipe and stone club. Rain-in-the-Face was a war chief of the Lakota tribe. He was among the leaders who defeated George Armstrong Custer and the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment at the 1876 Battle of Little Big Horn. Rain in the Face had a personal vendetta against the Custer brothers; he was their prisoner for three months but when he was able to escape promised to eat the heart of Tom Custer. Tom Custer was discovered mutilated and disemboweled after his defeat at Little Big Horn - though his heart was still in his chest. This was popularized by… Read More

Measuring 7 inches by 10 inches. 137 pages. Here, Hartree develops the powerful methods for numerical analysis that would make it possible for him to calculate atomic wave functions and perform early quantum mechanics. One of the earliest and most important works on computing from the 20th century, Hartree's Calculating Instruments and Machines fundamentally shaped the development of computing… Read More

This handbill notifies readers of an arson crime against an African-American WWII veteran, John T. Walker. "In Redwood City around 4 o'clock beonthe morning of December 6th, before it was light, cowardly carriers of degrading race hatred burned to the foundation the almost complete home of Pacific veteran John T. Walker!" The handbill goes on to argue that the incident should awaken local residents--no matter race or religion--to the growing power of "pro-fascist forces," and calls upon them to urge law agencies to conduct a thorough investigation. Very good condition. Evenly toned, horizontal fold crease. A fine piece of history documenting Communist activism in post-war America, before the height of the Cold War.

Second Giant March Up Market Street. San Francisco, CA, 1964. Broadside measuring 7 x 10 1/4 in. Printed by the Church Labor Conference, this broadside flyer circulated around San Francisco in advance of the July 12, 1964 Human Rights March. This protest was 35,000 strong and occurred one day before the opening of the Republican National Convention, where it was expected that Barry Goldwater would be announced as the official Republican nominee for the 1964 presidential election. Goldwater is often credited with prompting a significant resurgence of conservatism in the 1960s; he was a vocal opponent of the New Deal as well as the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This broadside identifies Goldwater as "the rallying center for the Birchers, White Citizens' Councils, KKK, [and] segregationists" and outlines various motives for the march, such as defeating Proposition 14, which was otherwise known as The Segregation Amendment and had just been placed on the upcoming ballot. Other reasons for march as delineated… Read More

Annette Alison. The Power of the Alumnae. Oakland: Everette S. Dowdle, 1920. First edition signed and inscribed on front endpaper "For the student's library Wheailand Hospital/ Fraternally Annette Allison, R.N. Oakland Cal., Dec. 9 1921" Original cream boards, 94 pages, 5.25 in x 7.5 in. Annette Alison writes about the need to support and recruit women in the field of nursing in the aftermath of World War I: "We have gone forward by leaps and bounds, for our profession is a new one, and the paths of the world are ours." Even by 1950, most nursing schools would only accept and train women under the explicit circumstance that they were single and without children. A practiced nurse concerned about the future of the profession, Annette Alison implores other nursing alumnae to become involved with nursing programs and students, preparing them to enter the male dominated medical field. Boards very lightly scuffed and corners gently bumped, but otherwise in very good condition.
