London: London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company Photographic cabinet card of Chang (Zhan Shichai), approximately 110mm x 165mm in size, n.d. c.1880?. Slightly creased across photographic image from the left hand edge to about an inch across, just catching the chest of Chang, heavy vertical crease to centre of card leaving it bowed. An attractive image of Chang and an unknown man, the reverse is printed with the details of the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company, with written details of Chang's size, age and weight, (above 8 feet high, 33 years old and 26 stones in weight) with Chinese characters to either side. Chang apparently had acromegaly, and was advertised as 'standing nearly nine feet high in his stocking feet' (Bogdan, 'Freak Show', page 99), according to Wikipedia he retired in 1878 and lived out the rest of days in Bournemouth, but there is a Times article from 1880 noting that he is appearing with Brustad and Che-Mah at the Aquarium in London. Ex-library copy with number to reverse of title and catalogue note to reverse of folding frontispiece, lightly browned, slightly chipped, folding frontispiece coming slightly detached from pamphlet at head but holding well, worn to spine where removed from a volume of pamphlets, otherwise fairly clean. The sermon comprises the first twelve pages, with a 'Brief Narrative of Events' of three pages, the final page lists the people killed in the disaster, including several children, the youngest being ten years old. The folding frontispiece is an image of the funeral procession taken from the Illustrated London News. Elliott appears at May-Day Green in the BBTI as a printer, bookseller, stationer, librarian/owner of circulating library, fl. 1840-1857. Uncommon, BL only in COPAC. First Edition. Disbound. No Place: No Publisher Complete set of eight 'Careless Talk Costs Lives' colour lithographic posters, approximately 205mm x 315mm in size, n.d. but c.1940, presumably produced for the Ministry of Information in London. A couple lightly browned and lightly foxed, otherwise fairly bright and clean. 'Fougasse' (after a type of anti-personnel mine), was Cyril Kenneth Bird (1887-1965). Shot in the spine at Gallipoli in 1915, he served as an air raid warden during the Second World War, and "his most memorable cartoons from this period are the posters he designed for government departments, such as the red-bordered 'Careless Talk Costs Lives' series (originally entitled 'Careless Talk May Cost Us All Dear') for the Ministry of Information" (Bryant, 'Dictionary of Twentieth-Century British Cartoonists and Caricaturists', pages 27-28).
