Light edge wear along the folded side, small loss just touching text affecting pp. 5/6, otherwise Very Good. A supporter of George McClellan, Ticknor writes in part: "No more awful spectacle can be contemplated than that of a great, powerful and energetic nation, who have no rule of action but the rule of a written Constitution, and who have lost their fidelity to its requirements. We have been so situated through three whole years of Civil War, that it has been in the power of extreme and violent men to denounce a pure and high regard for the limitations of our fundamental law as treason to the Union ..." The author, who was co-counsel for Dred Scott, concludes his essay with a series of "Mottoes fot the Campaign" selected from the writings of McClellan.

Original printed & decorated paper wraps, sewn. Text in French & English. OCLC finds a single copy at the New York Historical Society as of 6/4/2023.
Wraps toned, moderate edge wear, old horizontal folds, light foxing, faint signature in the top margin of the upper cover, otherwise very good.
Presumably a short-lived publication & likely the only number issued. Publisher Lacombe served, apparently, as editor & also contributed a sketch entitled "Fleurette." As noted on the verso of the upper wrap, each issue "will contain two plates." This example, with no evidence of removal, is without illustration & was probably distributed as a sample & prospectus.

Formed in 1847, the company was the family business of Samuel J. Tilden, Governor of New York & 1876 Democratic nominee for president. Their most successful product, known as "Tilden's Extract," was extracted from cannabis indica &, as described on p. 21, "specially recommended for tetanus, hydrophobia, neuralgia, gout, rheumatism, epidemic cholera, , convulsions, hysteria, mental depression, insanity, and uterine hemorrhage." Library of Congress deposit copy with rubber-stamped mark at the title page, "Q889" in pencil on the upper cover, wraps with a couple of small chips, moderately soiled, spine partially perished, Good or better. The author was the brother of noted photographer Isaiah West Taber. Charles Taber went west from Massachusetts with the Gold Rush and arrived in San Francisco in 1850 He tried his hand at mining, captained a ferry boat between Sacremento and San Francisco, and eventually became an artist and author. In addition to other titles relating to climate and geology, he wrote "Rhymes from a Sailor's Journal."

An early edition, perhaps the first American, of part of Dumas' "Celebrated Crimes" series, originally published in 1839 & 1840. The series provides semi-fictionalized accounts of the most noteworthy criminal cases in European history.
