The canal scene is an unusual departure from Charles Livingston Bull's animal and nature compositions, and quite unlike his other work found to date. Perhaps due to its geometric nature- it was an early study on perspective. Nevertheless, the confident use of tonality predicts his eventual command of charcoal as his desired medium for rendering any subject matter.
