Text bright and clean. Wide-margined copy.

Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]:: Ex officina Elzeviriana [Elzevier], 1634. Hardcover. Good. 24mo. Contemporary vellum. pp. [16], 310, [34] + Engraved title page by Duysent (spotted; contemporary ownership signature at top). Scattered stains, mainly to margins and outer portions of the page, primarily at the beginning and right at the end; some contemporary underscorring. Text in Latin. Copinger 4054; Willems 412n. Edited by Marcus Zuerius Boxhorn (1612-1653). This printing is one of Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir's famed pocket editions of Latin classics, initiated in 1629 during an expansion of the press. The aim was to ensure wide circulation of accurate texts for everyday use, and the books were printed with engraved title-pages, narrow margins, and a distinctive font of type, cut by Christoffel van Dijck, whose influence on subsequent typographers endured well into the 19th century.

A special issue devoted entirely to pantaloons, or the occasional lack thereof -- ain't nobody interested in dresses in this magazine, lessen they're pulled up over the model's head. Very light rubbing at spine tips and corners, otherwise fine. I see London, I see France, I see lots of underpants.

[Naples, Italy], 1791. Very Good. Manuscript on paper in Italian detailing the revenues of the Church of S. Maria del Presidio in Naples. Folio (312 x 229mm). 94 leaves in gatherings of 6. Written in a neat secretarial script in brown ink on recto and verso. Original wrappers inscribed “Stato Generale delle Rendite e dei pesi del Venerabile Monistero Sev Conservatorio di S. Maria del Presidio alla Pigna Secca 1791”, title between borders; (wraps somewhat brittle and browned, otherwise clean). Santa Maria del Presidio is a monumental church on the Via Pasquale Scura located in the Spanish Quarter of Naples, Italy. Within the church, the Penitentary, or Conservatory for Women, was founded in 1647 and placed under the care of the Pii Operarii of S. Nicola alla Carita. Just six years prior, devastating lava flows from Mount Vesuvius buried many villages in the city killing around 3,000 people. Publisher's decorative cloth, red cloth backstrip with lettering stamped in black; red and gold patterned dust jacket; 8vo; pp. [4], 230. Inscribed by the author on the FFEP, "For Juan Lopez / from his friend / Thornton Wilder / May 22, 1926 / Princeton, N.J. / 'I won't tell you whether this is true, or an allegory, or just nonsense,' p. 219." Book is very near fine, with just a little light rubbing at spine tips and along edges of boards. Dust jacket somewhat sunned along spine; and lightly chipped along the edges (including a large chip at tail of spine, not affecting text); but presents very nicely in mylar. An excellent copy of the author's first book, with a warm inscription, marking his time at Princeton.

Two volumes in contemporary calf, elegantly rebacked in light tan calf with dark brown morocco labels, raised bands, spine compartments gilt. 8 x 7 inches (20.5 x 18 cm); various paginations, with 45 and 50 superb engravings respectively, including engraved titles (the latter count including the ten engraved landscapes), largely stipple-engraved plates executed by Taylor and Ogborne mostly after designs by Samuel Shelley and Robert Smirke. Originally issued in parts, the work is rarely found complete with all plates. As the publishers state "Gentlemen may bind any numbers together to make a volume, and in any order they please," as a consequence of which few copies have the full quota of plates. The authors represented include Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, Gay, Burns, Goldsmith and others.

Written in black ink with red, green, brown and yellow ink between whimsically decorated borders of several doves, a lion, confronting rabbits and snails and other fantastical creatures, floreate decoration and flourishing pen marks. Original marbled paper wrappers (edges slightly curled, worm hole). Fine calligraphic writing manual, studying letters and copying popular adages. Title-page notes that this manuscript was created by "Cony" for the Christian Schools of Montpellier, France. Some sayings offer a glimpse of tradition township motto: "Ceux qui ont trouve quelque chose sont tenus de le rendre a celui qui la perdu et s'ils ne le connoissent pas faire tout ce qu'ils peuveunt pour le connaitre a Montpellier."

Numbered are 119 songs in verse composed of quatrains and couplets, also known as “chansons” or “parlour songs” all titled on table at rear leaves.
