Very rare and among the first American books to be illustrated with lithographic plates. The Cabinet of Natural History was started by brothers Thomas and John Doughty in Philadelphia. Full brown calf by Bumpus of Oxford, spines with raised bands, gilt titles, spines and boards tooled in blind in a mediaeval diaper designed with blind tooled symbols; inner dentelles tooled in blind; all edges gilt. Illustrated title pages and 30 color plates by Flint. A fine set. All dropped capitals have been embellished by hand in color or gold, 44 colored, 29 illuminated in gold. Nine full page decorations in mediaeval style by an unknown but utterly competent calligrapher, one to introduce each tale. All color plates have been laid down onto thick paper with captions added by hand, with their capitals added in gold. A scarce vellum edition now a unique copy in the Bumpus binding and illuminations. .

Accordion style, single sheet folded. 5 by 8 inches closed; 8 by over 90 inches extended, contained within a box in imitation of a book, with marbled paepr edges, blue faux leather padded cloth sides, gilt. Upper hinge repaired else this is a very good copy with fine photographs after Jackson. In all, sixteen vies of various canyons in Colorado. .

Volume I is the 1906 US firs tprinting; Volume II is the 1907 US first printing; and Volume II is the 1909 US first printing. Volume II spine gilt dulled (a comon issue with this volume), some rubbing to the spine, and inner hinges neatly repaired. Volumes I and II are in very good condition. Inner hinges of volume I neatly repaired; spine of Volume III is rubbed in places, else this is a very good set. The Kerr edition is the first US edition of Marx's complete three volume work usually known by its German title, Das Kapital. Only the first volume was published in Marx's lifetime; it appeared in the US in 1890. Engels completed the work using Marx's notes and published them in Germany in 1885 and 1894 respectively. Tall 8vo. xviii, 506pp. Brick red ribbed cloth blocked in blind on the boards and with a gilt spine title with black lines. Translated from the German by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling. Edited by Frederick Engels. Cloth is rubbed at edges and hinges else this is a very good copy. The bibliography of this edition is a little complex. In 1890 the Humboldt Publishing Company published this edition in English of Das Kapital in four separate parts bound in stapled wrappers. Later, probably the following year, some copies were disassembled and bound into a single volume, as in the present case. The wrappered edition contained publisher's ads. These were sometimes bound into the single volumes, sometimes not, and, in one case, only a couple of ads were bound in. Some bindings were blocked in black on the boards, some not. 1908. Stiff card. Near fine. Autograph on 2 by 3 inch card reading "Truly yours, Lillian Russell". Accompanied by a chromolithograqph cover cut from the October 1908 issue of 'The Theatre' showing the actress. Lillian Russell (1860-1922) was one of the most famous actresses and singers of the late 19th to early 20th centuries known for her beauty and style. The card has a bit of adhesive residue on the reverse else fine; the chromolithograph has two additional period clippings of Russell pasted on the reverse.

Both boards tooled in blind. The upper board has an onlay with a design by the binder. Blind tooled inner dentelles. Deep green marbled endpapers. A fine copy. The binding is by the late Bill Denny of Tucson. It is unsigned, but came to us directly form his estate. In addition, we discussed it with him before his death. .

A preliminary notice by Augustus Franks provides an obituary of Felix Slade, who died just before this work was completed. This is followed by Slade's Preface and by Nesbit's History of Glassmaking, a comprehensive view. Tipped onto a preliminary blank is a printed letter by Franks addressed in manuscript to Frederick Tucker, Esq, of 91 Victoria Street, presenting this volume to him. London: Efingham WIlson, 1833. First edition. Hardcover. Good. Three volumes, 8vo. Frontispieces in each volume. Original boards, printed paper labels. The hinges are weak and show some separation, but the boards are well attached. The frontispieces are foxed and that has offset onto the first few pages, including the endpapers. Otherwise, the textblocks are in very good to fine condition. Armorial bookplate in volume one with the Briggs motto "Fortiter et Fideliter". Also with the smapp stamp of A. C. Briggs on each free front endpaper. EAch volume with a cloth dustwrapper and housed in a matching slipcase. Rare in boards. .

Several flattened folds (as published), two closed marginal tears affecting the outside border but not touching the image, trace of soil, else a very good copy.

Later hand-coloring. Several flattened folds (as published) else a very good copy. The missionary ship Duff, under the command of Captain Wilson, sighted the islands in 1797, naming them for Adm. James Gambier. They are also known as the Mangareva Islands.
