In the pictorial dust jacket that shows moderate edge-wear and darkened spine. With "51" written lightly next to "BY" on the spine. The charming, uncredited dust jacket design carries a slight E. McKnight Kauffer influence, depicting a young couple on an alpine outing.We assume that their attachment is "calf love," for if bovine or tibial, color us confused. Dust jacket is now preserved in a clear, archival sleeve. .

James, the great promoter of California, sets forth in his pleasant armchair-style with a narrative enhanced by many photo plates throughout, some in color. The decorated cloth is a triumph of design.

A trade publication for the interior and industrial design fields, published by J. G. Bottini and edited by Carl A. Pierson. This issue features the seminal article on "California Modern" by Alvin Lustig. Several of his doodles are printed, illustrating his inorganic aesthetic. Now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve with acid-free backing.

Front endpaper inscribed in ink "Faithfully yours, John Steven McGroarty," and part of a signed typescript laid in expressing thanks for interest in his Mission Play (first produced in 1912.) Endpapers moderately age toned, former owner ink stamp to ffep, board edges rubbed, leaves crisp and binding tight. A well preserved copy, now with a clear, removable archival sleeve.

Beginning in the late 1860s, Fitzgerald served as Superintendent of Public Instruction of the State of California and laid the foundation for what would be come the University of California at Berkeley. A lavish compendium of information about California at the time, with a heavy emphasis on the history of Native Americans in the region, early exploration and its history as a Spanish colony, a Republic and state. Includes photos of contemporary office holders, and then some. The weight of the book will require additional postage. We charge for postage only, with no surcharge for shipping and handling.

Slight smudge the size of a chickpea on the front fore-edge, else Fine. Designed and printed by Lawton and Alfred Kenney and Charles R. Wood. "The Californian" was a vital, early Alta California imprint, the first California newspaper as documented by Henry Wagner in "California Imprints" (Berkeley, 1922). Later the press was sent from Monterey to San Francisco, and used in the production of "The Star," that city's first newspaper.

The notorious San Francisco magazine published in the 1890s for the delectation of the sporting and theatrical element. The chief substance of the periodical was the libelous gossip spread throughout its pages, recording in a scandalous and occasionally vitriolic manner the doings of men-about-town, brothel keepers, married men, sporting figures, prostitutes and saloon keepers. Vinson Joseph Gottstein was a native Seattleite educated in the East (Phillips Exeter Academy; Brown) before returning to engage in various business pursuits, mostly in real estate. From the dust jacket flap: "Was the convict woman Eliza Callaghan hidden at Ben Lomond by Batman in 1825? This volume gives the police evidence. Here also is the evidence given at her Old Bailey trial, and additionally the statements made at the inquest that followed her murder at Geelong in 1852." A fascinating look at one convict's ill-fated life, via primary documents.

Signed by the President of the United States of America, and the United States Attorney General, appointing Albert White as Marshal in the Territory of Alaska. Some slight spotting to document. Presented in a contemporary oak frame, with light scratches and slight chipping consistent with age. Signed in full in ink by Calvin Coolidge and US Attorney General John G. Sargent. By the 1850s, most presidential signatures were by proxy, with a secretary or clerk signing official documents with the authority of the president.
