Description:
Morning Sun Books. Hardcover. New. As the merger scene in the eastern United States heated up in the early 1960s with Erie Lackawanna, N&W-NKP-Wabash, and talk of Penn Central, a union of a different type occurred between the Chesapeake & Ohio and the Baltimore & Ohio. While not yet a true 'merger' for several reasons, the affiliation was dubbed C&O/B&O and quite visible track-side during the 1960s on timetables, advertisements, corporate reports, and especially track-side where C&O and B&O locomotives began mixing it up, especially on the B&O. Contents: Foreword, pg. 3, Introductory History, pp. 4-6, The Affiliation Takes Hold (1962-1964), pp. 7-17, C&O Tightens Its Grip (1965), pp. 18-28, A New Man At the Top, pp. 29-48, The Year of the 'Good Guys' (1967), pp. 49-66, Powerful Freights, Retreating Passengers (1968-1969), pp. 67-102, Approach of Amtrak and a New Corporate Identity (1970-1972), pp. 103-128. Description:
Tom Klinger Publishing. Hardcover. New. Originally this line was the route of the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad. Reaching from Denver, Colorado along the South Platte River to the entrance of the South Platte Canon, the line went up the canon and over the mountains to reach a mining district known as the Mineral Belt. The DSP&P later became a subsidiary of the Colorado & Southern railroad. Today, only a small branch of the line south of downtown Denver remains in operation. The former grade in the greater Denver area has been lost to urban development. The Mineral Belt was an area of great mineral wealth, and the railroad was needed to haul the gold, silver, lead, molybdenum, tungsten, zinc, coal and other less valuable mineral deposits down out of the mountains. But this was not the only traffic on the line, lumber and cattle were also sources of traffic. Many historical Black and White photographs supplement the text, including pictures of the steamers with their unique ""Bear Trap"" spark…

Shade Tree Books. Softcover. New. Many California railroads were organized, not to become a large railroad, but to simply serve some local purpose. Hauling lumber or minerals or sugar beets required rail services best provided by a focused, local organization. What is a short line' Basically a smaller railroad that operates limited mileage in a single region or state and perhaps is tied to a particular commodity or service. Whether private or common carrier, the styles of short line operation were similar. The two types of carriers often sold locomotives between one another, and these engines can be found lettered for both. What is a short line steam locomotive' Generally, they were built first with cost as a primary consideration, followed by compatibility with existing infrastructure (bridge weight limits and track structure). Most weighed 90 tons or less, with small-diameter driving wheels to operate at slow speeds. This book documents in B&W photographs with captions and text those non-geared…
