It was a very international scientific society, and other early members included von Heynitz, Lavoisier, Gmelin, Charpentier, Ferber, Poda, Hawkins, and Goethe. Large poster catalogue (445 x 572 mm.) of Ruscha's first 10 artist's books, vertical & horizontal folds, ms. prices added in blue ink. Los Angeles: Heavy Industry Publications, [ca. 1970]. Rare catalogue, in poster format, of Ruscha's photographic artist's books; WorldCat records just the copy at the RKD in The Hague, although we know of several copies in American institutions. Most examples that we have seen are cut into two horizontal rows, the present is intact as it was originally printed. This copy seems to have been sent to Europe because some of the books have had their prices updated, possibly in Dutch guilders. Bannermen referred to soldiers, and their dependents, in the Manchu's armies that invaded China in 1644. There were Manchu, Mongol, and Chinese banners, and their members retained separate identities, yet as bannermen they shared many aspects of urban garrison life and culture. With many bannermen living a life of peace as officials with primarily civilian tasks, writers and men of letters emerged from the banner milieu. Toward the end of the 19th century, efforts were made to take stock of the literary production of the banners. Munich: J.B. Strobl, 1786. First edition of this rare epistolary account of Schrank's scientific field trip throughout Bavaria in 1784 and 1785. While Schrank devotes a good portion of the text to botanical observations, he also provides descriptions of the towns and cities visited, the geology and most remarkable natural features of the area, the monasteries, local customs, etc. The twelfth letter contains a learned account of Bavarian incunabula (with a series of woodcut reproductions of watermarks) and a description of the library of Kloster Steingaden. First edition and very rare; this work was written as a result of the devastating Great Kyoto Fire, which broke out on 7 March 1788 and lasted several days. It caused serious damage, including the destruction of the Imperial Palace and the Nijo-jo Castle. The fire so shocked the bakufu that senior councillor Sadanobu Matsudaira was sent to Kyoto to investigate and consult with the Imperial Court. The first woodcut depicts how one can prepare for a quick escape in case of fire. This single-page illustration shows how to leave one's street clothes at nighttime so that they can be put on quickly for a fast evacuation. The Schmidt Heins twins (b. 1949) are two of the most active and prolific book artists in Germany, engaging with newspapers, magazines, photographs, coffee beans, paint, etc. Guy Schraenen (1941-2018), curator at the Neues Museum Weserburg, conceived this exhibition as a retrospective of their bookworks from 1972-82. This catalogue was jointly designed by the twins. Schraenen contributes an essay entitled "Einzahl Mehrzal." With useful lists of exhibitions and books on the penultimate page. Fine copy. An essential reference work on one of the most intrepid artist-run presses of the 1970s. Established by Felipe Ehrenberg, Martha Hellion, and David Mayor in 1971, the Beau Geste Press published around 75 books, multiples, and magazines in a farmhouse in Devon, UK. Their mission was to print materials in close collaboration with artists. This included figures like Ulises Carrión, Helen Chadwick, Ken Friedman, Klaus Groh, Raúl Marroquin, Opal L. Nations, Takako Saito, Carolee Schneemann, Endre Tot, Ben Vautier, Hideki Yoshida, etc. The book has numerous personal accounts from the co-founders, their collaborators, and scholars. There is also an authoritative and thoroughly illustrated bibliography of the press's output until its closing in 1976. As new. WorldCat records only three copies in the United States.

One of 1000 copies, an Adam Pendleton (b. 1984) artist's book published for his exhibition Adam Pendleton: Becoming Imperceptible (1 April-16 June 2016) at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans. It is filled with found images and photographs selected by Pendleton and the artist's original texts. A separate booklet (30 pp.), bound-in at the middle of the text block, contains essays by Andrea Andersson, Naomi Beckwith, Stephen Squibb, and Kitty Scott. The dust-jacket doubles as a large poster. Near fine, this book is now scarce.

Agius published two of Carrión's bookworks: Verzamelde Werken (1980) and Sistemas (1983). Carrión writes: "This catalogue illustrates the publishing activity developed by Juan Agius, from Da Costa Gallery, during the last 4 years. In 1930, the Historiographical Research Group of the National Research Academy of Beiping, as Beijing was then called, decided that "in preparation for producing a gazetteer for Beijing, the Buddhist temples, altars, Confucian temples, shrines, and halls will be surveyed by district and rubbings taken of stone inscriptions, for use in the [gazetteer's] treatises on temples and epigraphy.
