Description:
N.P.: Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corp, 1949. First edition. THE FIRST STORED-PROGRAMME COMPUTER IN THE US. Very rare sales brochure for Eckert and Mauchly's BINAC, the first operational stored-programme computer in the United States. J. Presper Eckert, together with his partner John Mauchly, invented and constructed the first general-purpose digital computer (the ENIAC) during World War II. After the war he and Mauchly founded the first commercial computer company in the United States, the Electronic Control Co., soon renamed the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation. While developing the UNIVAC for the U. S. Census Bureau, Eckert and Mauchly contracted with the Northrop Aircraft Company in southern California to develop and construct a BINary Automatic Computer (BINAC). The contract was signed in October 1947, with Northrop providing $80,000 up front; another $20,000 was due upon delivery of the machine. "Had it been finished on time [i.e., by May 15, 1948] it would have been in contention with the… Read More

Description:
Prague: Gottlieb Haase & Sons, 1846. First edition. PHOTOMETRY IN ASTROPHYSICS. First edition, very rare separately-paginated offprint, of this important complement to Doppler's epoch-making discovery in 1842 of the principle named after him. The three articles comprising this offprint contain extensions of the Doppler principle, as well as the first suggestion to use photographic and photometric methods for the determination of the sizes and distances of stars. "Doppler's scientific fame rests on his enunciation of the Doppler principle, which relates the observed frequency of a wave to the motion of the source or the observer relative to the medium in which the wave is propagated. This appears in his article 'Ueber das farbige Licht der Doppelsterne und einiger anderer Gestirne des Himmels' (read 25 May 1842). The correct elementary formula is derived for motion of source or of observer along the line between them; the extension to the motion of both at the same time appears in an article of 1846… Read More

Description:
München: Lentner, 1817. First edition. THE FOUNDING WORK OF ASTROPHYSICS THE FIRST ILLUSTRATION OF THE SOLAR SPECTRUM . First edition, journal issue, of the founding work of astrophysics, the discovery of the absorption lines in the solar spectrum; the second plate, which reproduces Fraunhofer's drawing of these lines (etched by Fraunhofer himself), is the first illustration of the solar spectrum. "In 1802, when describing his new process for measuring the refraction of light, W. H. Wollaston reported the occurrence of dark lines in the solar spectrum but regarded them as simply natural dividing lines between the colours. Fraunhofer, originally not a scientist, but a practising optician, concentrated on these dark lines, and the title of his paper describes the method and purpose of his investigations: 'Definition of the Capacity of Refraction and Colour-diffusion of various kinds of Glass' ... His achievements justify describing him as the founder of astrophysics. He charted several hundred lines,… Read More

Description:
D. M. Philadelpha: Printed by William Fry for Thomas Dobson, 1814. First edition. THE FIRST HEBREW BIBLE PRINTED IN AMERICA WITH THE EXTREMELY RARE LEAF EXPLAINING ITS GENESIS. First edition of the first Hebrew Bible printed in America, of major importance in the field of American Judaica - this copy with the leaf explaining the genesis of this edition and present in very few copies. Based on a Bible published in Amsterdam in 1705 by Everard van der Hooght, which became a model for many other editions of the Hebrew Bible, this project was launched by Jonathan Horwitz of Philadelphia in 1812, who sold his rights and subscriber list to Thomas Dobson in 1814. The prospectus promised that it would be printed "with a new pica Hebrew type, cast for the purpose at the foundery of Binny and Ronaldson." He had proposed the publication of an edition of the Hebrew Bible for the American market in 1812, but found that he faced stiff commercial competition to this endeavor from other publishers who were working… Read More

Description:
[London: Macmillan, 1974. THE DISCOVERY OF HAWKING RADIATION - 'ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS EVER IN FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS'. First edition, extremely rare offprint issue, and Hawking's own file copy, of his most important article, predicting that black holes emit radiation, now known as 'Hawking radiation'. This would cause relatively low mass black holes (less than 1012 kg) to 'evaporate' completely in a time less than the age of the universe. The discovery that black holes radiate was a complete shock to the scientific community since it had been assumed that nothing, not even light, could escape from a black hole (that was, of course, why they were called black holes!). Hawking's Royal Society obituary stated: "It is fair to say that Stephen's discovery [of Hawking radiation] ranks as one of the most important results ever in fundamental physics" (Carr, et al.). John Archibald Wheeler once said that just talking about Hawking radiation was like "rolling candy on the tongue" (ibid.). Hawking's… Read More

Description:
Leipzig & Berlin: Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig & Springer, 1921. First edition. CARL NEUMANN: AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF OFFPRINTS. A remarkable collection of offprints, a major portion of the published works of Carl Gottfried Neumann (1832-1925), representing virtually all of the areas to which he contributed, most importantly the related fields of electromagnetism and potential theory. His lasting influence in these areas is reflected in the number of mathematical concepts which are today named after him, including the 'Neumann-Poincaré operator,' the 'Neumann boundary value problem,' the 'Neumann boundary condition,' the 'Neumann series,' and the 'Neumann problem.' "Stimulated by Bernhard Riemann's work on electrodynamics, Neumann developed a theory founded on the finite [speed of] propagation of electrodynamic actions, which interested Wilhelm Eduard Weber and Rudolf Clausius into striking up a correspondence with him ... Maxwell makes reference to the electrodynamic theory… Read More

Description:
Berlin: Johann Christian Papen, 1710. First edition. Hardcover. LEIBNIZ'S CALCULATING MACHINE - THE MACCLESFIELD COPY. First edition, the Macclesfield copy, of this milestone in computer history, Leibniz's description of his famous calculating machine, the first stepped-drum calculator, and the first machine that could perform multiplication and division. "Leibniz studied Morland's and Pascal's various designs and set himself the task of constructing a more perfect and efficient machine. To begin with, he improved Pascal's device by adding a stepped-cylinder to represent the digits 1 through 9 ... In 1694, Leibniz built his calculating machine, which was far superior to Pascal's and was the first general purpose calculating device able to meet the major needs of mathematicians and bookkeepers" (Rosenberg, The Computer Prophets, p 48). "[He] invented a device now known as the Leibniz wheel and still in use in some machines. The mechanism enabled him to build a machine which surpassed Pascal's in that… Read More

Description:
[Berlin: Springer, 1925. First edition. Hardcover. THE HILBERT PROGRAM. First edition, very rare offprint, of this famous lecture which contains Hilbert's most detailed exposition of his proposal for the foundation of classical mathematics, which became known as Hilbert's Programme. "No one shall expel us from the paradise which Cantor has created for us," Hilbert famously declared in this lecture (p. 170). This paper further contains his attempted proof of the 'continuum hypothesis', that no set can have both 'fewer' elements than the set of real numbers and 'more' than the set of integers - the terms 'more' and 'fewer' referring to the (infinite) numbers of elements in these sets, understood in terms of Georg Cantor's theory of 'cardinal numbers' of infinite sets. "Hilbert devoted to the foundations of mathematics a series of papers ... Among all these contributions the 1925 paper [the offered item] stands out as the most comprehensive presentation of Hilbert's ideas. It is the text of an address… Read More

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1926. First edition. Hardcover. THE FIRST TEST OF QUANTUM MECHANICS. First edition, journal issue in original printed wrappers, of Pauli's important derivation of the hydrogen spectrum from the new quantum mechanics, providing the first validation of Heisenberg's theory. As Pauli explains in the abstract: "It is shown that the Balmer terms of an atom with a single electron are yielded correctly by the new quantum mechanics and that the difficulties which arose in the old theory... disappear in the new theory." Heisenberg's epochal 'Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen,' the invention of quantum mechanics, had appeared just a few months earlier, in September 1925. "The first nontrivial and physically important application of quantum mechanics was made soon afterwards by Wolfgang Pauli [in the present paper], who calculated the stationary energy values of the hydrogen atom by the matrix method and found complete agreement with Bohr's… Read More

Berlin: Georg Reimer, 1847. First edition. EVANS 41 - The DOCTRINE OF THE CONSERVATION OF ENERGY. First edition, rare, of "the first comprehensive statement of the first law of thermodynamics: that all modes of energy, heat, light, electricity, and all chemical phenomena, are capable of transformation from one to the other but are indestructible and cannot be created" (PMM). "On the basis of this short paper, written when he was only twenty-six, Helmholtz is ranked as one of the founders, along with Joule and Mayer, of the principle of conservation of energy. The paper sets forth the philosophical and physical basis of the energy conservation principle: Helmholtz maintained that the scientific world view was based on two abstractions, matter and force, and since the only possible relationship that can exist among the ultimate particles of matter is a spatial one, then ultimate forces must be moving forces radically directed. This can be inferred from the impossibility of producing work continually… Read More

Berlin: Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1888. First edition. FIRST PROOF THAT ELECTROMAGNETIC EFFECTS PROPAGATE AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT. First edition, complete journal issue in original printed wrappers, of one of the two most important papers of Hertz's on electromagnetic waves, in which he demonstrates for the first time that electromagnetic effects propagate at the speed of light (it was only a month later that he first produced and detected electric waves). "In his Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (1873) [Maxwell] gave no theory of oscillatory circuits or of the connection between currents and electromagnetic waves. The possibility of producing electromagnetic waves in air was inherent in his theory, but it was by no means obvious and was nowhere spelled out. Hertz's proof of such waves was in part owing to his theoretical penetration into Maxwell's thought" (DSB). "Experimental proof by Hertz of the Faraday-Maxwell hypothesis that electrical waves can be projected through space… Read More

Description:
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1926. First edition. Hardcover. SYMMETRY IN QUANTUM MECHANICS. First editions, very rare offprint issues, of the papers that laid the foundations of the role of symmetry in quantum mechanics. "Wigner was a member of the race of giants that reformulated the laws of nature after the quantum mechanics revolution of 1924-25. In a series of papers on atomic and molecular structure, written between 1926 and 1928, Wigner laid the foundations for both the application of group theory to quantum mechanics and for the role of symmetry in quantum mechanics" (David J. Gross, 'Symmetry in Physics: Wigner's legacy,' Physics Today, December 1995, pp. 46-50). Wigner was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 "for his contributions to the theory of the atomic nucleus and the elementary particles, particularly through the discovery and application of fundamental symmetry principles." Provenance: the last three offprints with the signature of German physicist Gregor Wentzel (1898-1978),… Read More
